It has been a wet weekend in the Western Cape with 143mm of rain recorded over the past seven days.
While the sun came out on Monday there is little doubt the going at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Tuesday is certain to be on the soft side.
Obviously, it would be advisable to side with runners who have decent form in the wet but that is not always possible as some of them have not yet raced in the conditions.
It will also be worth keeping an eye on where the better going might be, especially up the straight.
Heading up the card is a Grade A Stakes over 1100m in Race 3 but that has already been decimated by two scratchings which only leaves five runners. Nevertheless, it remains quite a competitive event but with Piet Steyn’s two runners, Gem King and Meu Capitano, coming out, it might be worth going with Vaughan Marshall-trained Dumbledore.
The four-year-old William Longsword gelding has won two of his last four starts and although he has yet to win in soft going, he has placed in four of his five starts in the wet.
In addition, he has Richard Fourie in the irons and he has a record of two wins, a second and two third places in six rides aboard the gelding.
The main threat has to come from Kaiboy who did finish in front of Dumbledore last time, but although beaten just 0.20 lengths, Marshall’s charge was held up at the 400m mark and was unable to get a clear passage for a while. Once he saw daylight Dumbledore ran on strongly and at the same weights, should be able to reverse that results.
