At just 15 years old, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is already doing things most professional cricketers never achieve in an entire career. After his astonishing 97 off just 29 balls in Wednesday night’s IPL 2026 Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the teenager is no longer simply viewed as a promising youngster.

He is now one of the biggest stories in world cricket.
Sooryavanshi’s breathtaking innings powered Rajasthan Royals into Qualifier 2 while simultaneously rewriting multiple IPL records in one of the most explosive playoff knocks the tournament has ever seen.
And remarkably, he came within just three runs of breaking Chris Gayle’s legendary record for the fastest century in IPL history.

The Night the Cricket World Fully Took Notice
The IPL has seen plenty of young stars before.
But what Sooryavanshi did against Sunrisers Hyderabad felt different.
Walking into a high-pressure playoff match at just 15 years old, the Rajasthan Royals opener completely dismantled one of the tournament’s strongest bowling attacks.
He smashed:
- 97 runs off 29 balls,
- 12 sixes,
- and scored at an astonishing strike rate above 330.
For large parts of the innings, it genuinely looked like he might break Gayle’s iconic 30-ball century record.
Instead, he fell agonisingly short on 97 after being caught at deep third.
But even without the hundred, the innings instantly entered IPL folklore.
The Records Already Broken
What makes Sooryavanshi’s rise even more absurd is how many records he has already shattered before even turning 16.
Most Sixes in a Single IPL Season
During the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi broke Chris Gayle’s long-standing record for most sixes in a single IPL season.
He moved to 65 sixes, surpassing Gayle’s previous mark of 59. Incredibly, he achieved it while facing far fewer balls than Gayle did during his peak years.
Youngest IPL Centurion
Earlier in the season, Sooryavanshi became the youngest player ever to score a century in IPL history after smashing a 35-ball hundred for Rajasthan Royals.
That innings immediately transformed him from a promising talent into a global cricket phenomenon.
Fastest IPL Century by an Indian
That same century also became the fastest IPL hundred ever scored by an Indian batter. Only Chris Gayle’s legendary 30-ball century remains faster overall.
And after Wednesday night’s Eliminator innings, even that record suddenly looks vulnerable.
Youngest List A Centurion
Before dominating the IPL, Sooryavanshi had already broken domestic records by becoming the youngest player ever to score a List A century.
He achieved that feat at just 14 years old.

The Numbers Behind the Madness
The statistics from Sooryavanshi’s IPL season already feel almost unrealistic.
He currently has:
- 680 runs,
- a strike rate above 240,
- 65 sixes,
- and multiple record-breaking innings.
Even more impressively, many of those performances have come in pressure matches late in the tournament.
At 15 years old, he is not merely surviving IPL cricket.
He is dominating it.
