Premier League 2026/27: Arsenal vs Chelsea Prediction

Two perfect Premier League records go on the line when Arsenal welcome Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium for a blockbuster London derby on Sunday.

Defending champions Arsenal have started their title defence in a typically controlled fashion, beating Coventry City 3-0 before grinding out a 1-0 victory away to Aston Villa. Chelsea have also collected six points from six under new manager Xabi Alonso, although the Blues have taken a considerably more entertaining route, beating Fulham 3-2 and Brighton 4-3.

That contrast makes Sunday’s encounter particularly intriguing. Arsenal are yet to concede a Premier League goal this season, while Chelsea have scored seven in two matches. The Gunners also boast an excellent recent record against their London rivals, but Palmer, Joao Pedro and Morgan Rogers give the visitors enough attacking firepower to provide Mikel Arteta’s defence with its biggest examination yet.

Betting Preview

Arsenal have started the new season exactly where they left off after winning the Premier League title in 2025/26.

Arteta’s men opened their defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly promoted Coventry at the Emirates, with Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard getting on the scoresheet. They followed that with a much more demanding trip to Aston Villa, where Saka’s second-half goal proved enough to secure a 1-0 victory.

Six points, four goals scored and none conceded represents an almost perfect start.

The defensive numbers are even more impressive. Arsenal have faced only 11 shots across their opening two Premier League matches, with just one hitting the target. Their opponents have generated only 0.54 expected goals in total, highlighting just how effectively Arteta’s side have controlled matches without the ball.

Chelsea will provide a very different test.

Alonso’s first two Premier League matches in charge have produced 12 goals, with the Blues scoring seven and conceding five. They edged Fulham 3-2 on the opening weekend before surviving an extraordinary 4-3 encounter with Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

That attacking output has been driven by a new-look frontline featuring Palmer, Joao Pedro and Rogers. Joao Pedro has made an especially impressive start with two goals and two assists, while Palmer has also scored twice and could register his 50th Premier League goal for Chelsea this weekend.

Chelsea therefore possess considerably more attacking quality than either of Arsenal’s first two league opponents.

The concern for Alonso is at the other end.

Conceding five times in two Premier League games is hardly ideal preparation for a trip to the champions, particularly when Arsenal have several players capable of exploiting defensive mistakes. Saka has scored in both league matches so far, while Havertz, Odegaard, Eberechi Eze and Christos Tzolis provide Arteta with plenty of additional attacking options.

Chelsea’s midfield situation could also become important. Enzo Fernandez left for Manchester City on deadline day, while Moises Caicedo aggravated an injury after coming off the bench against Brighton and is a doubt for Sunday.

Arsenal have fitness concerns of their own. William Saliba remains sidelined with a back problem and Jurrien Timber is not expected to be ready, while Cristhian Mosquera missed training on Thursday after being withdrawn against Villa. Declan Rice, who also came off at Villa Park, has returned to training and is expected to be available.

Those defensive absences may give Chelsea encouragement, but Arsenal have so far demonstrated that their defensive strength extends beyond individual personnel.

Sunday should reveal whether that structure can withstand the most dangerous attack it has faced this season.

Chelsea haven’t beaten Arsenal since 2021 and have lost on each of their last five trips to the Emirates. While Alonso’s new-look attack should make this a tougher examination, Arsenal have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to control this fixture in recent seasons.

This London derby should end in a draw or a narrow Arsenal victory.
