This remarkable innings surpassed the previous record for the highest score on ODI debut, held by West Indies’ Desmond Haynes, who scored 148 against Australia in 1978.
Breetzke’s performance was instrumental in South Africa’s total of 304 for six in their 50 overs. Despite his efforts, New Zealand successfully chased the target, with captain Kane Williamson remaining unbeaten on 133, leading his team to a six-wicket victory with eight balls to spare.
Reflecting on his innings, Breetzke said, “It hasn’t sunk in yet and I’m a bit tired. The pitch was tacky and Will O’Rourke was really tough to face. My mindset was to bat as long as possible and give myself a chance at the end.”
