Breetzke’s Historic Debut: South African Batter Sets ODI Record

Matthew Breetzke ODI Record

South African cricketer Matthew Breetzke made a historic ODI debut on Monday, against New Zealand during the Tri-Nations series at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Opening the batting, the 26-year-old scored 150 runs off 148 balls, hitting 11 fours and five sixes. This remarkable innings surpassed the previous record for the highest score on ODI debut, held by West Indies’ Desmond Haynes, who scored 148 against Australia in 1978.

Breetzke’s performance was instrumental in South Africa’s total of 304 for six in their 50 overs. Despite his efforts, New Zealand successfully chased the target, with captain Kane Williamson remaining unbeaten on 133, leading his team to a six-wicket victory with eight balls to spare.

Reflecting on his innings, Breetzke said, “It hasn’t sunk in yet and I’m a bit tired. The pitch was tacky and Will O’Rourke was really tough to face. My mindset was to bat as long as possible and give myself a chance at the end.”

Before this match, Breetzke had represented South Africa in 10 Twenty20 Internationals and one Test match. His selection for this ODI came as part of a squad missing several leading batters, providing him the opportunity to showcase his talent on the international stage.

Breetzke’s record-breaking debut not only highlights his individual talent but also adds a significant milestone to South Africa’s cricketing history. As he continues his international career, fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how he builds upon this extraordinary start.
