Walter’s tenure, which began in January 2023, saw the Proteas achieve significant milestones. Under his leadership, the team reached their first-ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final in 2024, finishing as runners-up to India. Additionally, they made semi-final appearances in the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

In a statement, Walter expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments:

“Coaching the Proteas has been an incredible honour, and I am immensely proud of what we have achieved together.”

Cricket South Africa’s Director of National Teams and High Performance, Enoch Nkwe, acknowledged Walter’s contributions, emphasising his role in expanding the talent pool and providing opportunities for emerging players.

Speculation has arisen regarding Walter’s future, with reports linking him to the head coach position for New Zealand’s national team. His previous coaching experience in New Zealand, including stints with Otago Volts and Central Stags, positions him as a strong candidate.

As South Africa prepares to co-host the 2027 Cricket World Cup alongside Namibia and Zimbabwe, the search for Walter’s successor will be pivotal in shaping the team’s trajectory.
