The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have confirmed England’s playing XI for the second Test of the Ashes, set to begin Thursday at The Gabba. The only change from the defeat in Perth is: all-rounder Will Jacks replaces injured pacer Mark Wood.

Jacks, who last played a Test in 2022, brings both batting depth and off-spin, a tactical shift away from the four-pronged fast attack of the first game. At the same time, England retain their core batting and seam-bowling resources, hoping to rebound from an unconvincing start Down Under.
What the Change Means
Dropping Mark Wood and replacing him with Will Jacks suggests England are leaning toward bowling variety over outright pace, especially in the pink-ball environment at night. With seamers like Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse and all-rounder captain Ben Stokes still in the XI, seam strength remains, but Jacks offers an alternate spin/batting option that could pay dividends, especially in Brisbane’s changing conditions.
England XI:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.
