The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has ushered in a new era by appointing Stephen Fleming as England Men’s Test head coach, while Joe Root has been reinstated as Test captain. The appointments come following the departure of Brendon McCullum as red-ball coach and the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket earlier this month.
Fleming, one of the most respected figures in world cricket, takes over after building an outstanding coaching CV in franchise cricket, most notably leading the Chennai Super Kings to multiple Indian Premier League titles. The former New Zealand captain will officially begin his tenure ahead of England’s winter tour of South Africa, with Marcus Trescothick overseeing the upcoming home Test series against Pakistan on an interim basis.
The ECB believes Fleming is the ideal candidate to guide England’s next generation of Test cricketers. Managing Director Rob Key described the 53-year-old as “the best person” to turn England into a team capable of achieving sustained success at the highest level.
Alongside Fleming’s appointment, Joe Root returns for a second spell as England’s Test captain. England’s all-time leading Test run scorer previously led the side in a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022 and recently stood in as captain during Ben Stokes’ absence. The ECB has opted for Root’s experience over handing the role to a younger player, believing his leadership will complement Fleming’s calm and methodical coaching style.
Speaking after the announcement, Root said it was a “great honour and privilege” to captain England once again and expressed his excitement about working with Fleming to lead the team into a new era. Fleming, meanwhile, said he was looking forward to building on the foundations already in place and helping England realise its considerable Test potential.
The appointments mark one of the biggest changes in English cricket in recent years, with the ECB hoping the experienced duo can return England to the top of the Test game ahead of a crucial new World Test Championship cycle and future Ashes campaigns.
