Bavuma Returns As Proteas Name Strong Squad For Australia ODI Series

The Proteas have brought back the big guns for their upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, with Temba Bavuma returning to captain a strong 16-man squad later this month.

South Africa will host the reigning world champions in Durban, Johannesburg and Potchefstroom from 24-30 September as preparations for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup continue to gather pace.

Bavuma returns to the ODI side for the first time since the series against India in December 2025, while Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs are among several established names back in the squad.

However, there is one significant absentee.

Kagiso Rabada has been ruled out of the entire ODI series as he continues his rehabilitation from a right hamstring injury, leaving South Africa without their premier fast bowler against a powerful Australian side.

Coetzee Earns Long-Awaited ODI Recall

One of the biggest stories from the announcement is the return of Gerald Coetzee.

The 25-year-old fast bowler has been recalled to the ODI setup almost three years after his last appearance in the format, which came during the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India.

Coetzee forms part of an exciting pace group alongside Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman and Kwena Maphaka, with Jansen and Corbin Bosch providing additional seam options as all-rounders.

His return is particularly timely given Rabada’s absence.

Proteas head coach Shukri Conrad said Coetzee has been bowling with serious pace ahead of his international return, while Baartman’s ability at the death has also earned him an opportunity to demonstrate what he can offer in 50-over cricket.

With the World Cup now just over a year away, performances against Australia could go a long way towards determining which fast bowlers form part of South Africa’s plans for 2027.

Experienced Batting Core Returns

South Africa have also recalled plenty of experience with the bat.

Bavuma will lead the side, while De Kock, Rickelton and Tony de Zorzi give the Proteas several options at the top of the order.

Markram is also included, although he will miss the opening ODI at Kingsmead before becoming available for the second and third matches.

Further down the order, Matthew Breetzke, Miller and Stubbs provide South Africa with a combination of experience, power and versatility.

It is an area Conrad has clearly prioritised.

The Proteas coach explained following the squad announcement that South Africa want a middle order capable of producing explosive cricket while still having the ability to absorb pressure and take an innings deep.

That balance will be crucial against Australia.

The visitors have named a formidable squad of their own, with Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head returning and Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc joining the group specifically for the South African leg of their tour.

South Africa’s batting depth will therefore receive a serious examination.

All Eyes On The 2027 World Cup

The importance of this series extends well beyond three matches against Australia.

South Africa will co-host the 2027 Cricket World Cup alongside Zimbabwe and Namibia, meaning virtually every ODI from this point forward will be viewed through the lens of building a squad capable of challenging for the trophy on home soil.

Conrad acknowledged as much when announcing his squad, describing the Australia series as an important step in shaping the group ahead of the tournament.

The Proteas will also face Bangladesh and England later in the home summer, giving the selectors further opportunities to assess combinations and determine which players can fill specific roles.

Australia represent an ideal starting point.

The reigning world champions are also using the series as preparation for 2027 and have selected a strong squad featuring Marsh, Head, Cummins, Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, Adam Zampa and Alex Carey.

There will therefore be very little friendly about this series.

First ODI: Thursday, 24 September – Kingsmead, Durban – 10:00

Second ODI: Sunday, 27 September – Wanderers, Johannesburg – 10:00

Third ODI: Wednesday, 30 September – JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom – 13:30

The second ODI will also be South Africa’s annual Pink Day fixture at the Wanderers, one of the standout occasions on the country’s cricket calendar.
