Starliner to Launch Newcastle Mission

With no South African racing today, Tuesday 14 January, bettors will undoubtedly be looking to the UK for their daily punting pleasure.

TAB will be offering betting on three UK meetings today, notably the flat race meetings at Southwell and Newcastle.

At Newcastle, Starliner can shine in Race 2, a Class 5 contest over 1400m.

Linda Perratt’s four-year-old has visited the track for his last four outings and has been there or thereabouts on all but one occasion.

His last effort was a close third when beaten only 0.75-lengths having been inched into slightly more competitive company last week.

Now back to his prior grade off the same mark, the gelding looks well-placed to get his head in front under 5lb-claimer Tommie Jakes.

Above, who lines up in Race 3 over 1000m, has fallen down the handicap. Rated as high as 100 at his peak, Above now sits on a perch of 72 and that looked highly workable when he was a 1.25-length second at Kempton just under a week ago.

He defied odds of 33-1 for Robert Cowell as he stayed on gamely over 1200m having run similarly well over the minimum distance on his previous outing.

Above is well weighted and hitting form, which could be a dangerous combination.

At Southwell, Nala The Lioness can get off the mark in the opener. – Press Association
