A change is as good as a holiday is a common saying and that could well be said about Bank Street, who has been in impressive form since joining Stuart Ferrie’s KwaZulu-Natal stable.
The four-year-old Global View gelding was trained by Vaughan Marshall in the Western Cape and won his maiden in his third career race. It was a short-head victory and after that he went off the boil.
Perhaps the connections felt this gelding would prefer the Polytrack and if that was the case, they were right on the mark. He has had four runs on the surface and after finishing third in his first two starts, he notched up a win followed by a second place.
That runner-up spot last time was a fast-finishing 0.90-lengths behind Mvelelo and Bank Street was desperately unlucky as he was eased 250m from home.
On Monday he lines up in Race 7, a Class 4 Handicap over 1200m, the same distance as all four of his KZN races, and he should be very hard to beat.
He meets Mvelelo on 1.5kg better terms, is well drawn in gate No 3 and has Muzi Yeni up for the first time. On a tricky card he could prove to be a banger in all bets.
Kanaal Skater is another who has moved from Cape Town where he showed promise and he too won his maiden over 1200m in good style. But it was only when stepped up to 1600m in his last start that he travelled a lot more comfortably and finished fluently to beat hard-knocking older rivals without coming under much pressure.
He may have lost his Polytrack debut but he was not disgraced when beaten 3.70 lengths by Super Fast – and that was over 1200m.
Dean Kannemeyer’s charge lines up in Race 2, a Class 4 Handicap over 1600m, jumps from Gate No 1 with Craig Zackey up.
