Mother Knows Best at Turffotein

Jack Milner

For the second successive weekend racing on the Highveld will take place at Turffontein on Sunday. While there are no feature races on the card it nevertheless is decent with some interesting betting opportunities for punters.

There are a number of prospective best bets on the card but the best of the rest could be Doesyourmotherknow who lines up in Race 3, a Maiden Juvenile Plate for fillies over 1400m.

This daughter of Master Of My Fate is trained by Candice and Tammy Dawson and has only run twice.

She received betting support in both of her starts, shortening from an opening call of 16-1 on debut to go off at 5-2. That race was over 1000m and unfortunately this filly returned with a scalp wound and could only finish fourth, beaten 5.230 lengths by Spirit Of Gabz.

It should be noted that two winners from four runners have gone on to win their next starts.

She probably found the trip 100m too short and was next put over 1450m on the Turffontein Inside track. This time she went off second favourite at 18-10 and again inexperience cost her as she over-raced, and although looking a winner at the 200m mark, she was run out of it late, finished a 0.85-length third behind 1-1 favourite Within Reach.

That form got a boost when the runner who split them second-place Moana, went on to reverse that form with Within Reach in her second start, she was in receipt of 3kg in a Juvenile Plate

Her form lines are strong and on that basis Doesyourmotherknow, who is nicely positioned in gate No 2 and will have log-leading jockey Craig Zackey up for the first time, looks a good bet to shed her maiden tag.

A race later Muzi Yeni could find himself in the No 1 box when he rides Sendai in this Maiden Plate over 1400m.

Sendai caught the eye when finishing third on his Highveld debut for trainer Fanie Bronkhorst just 15 days ago. The son of Danon Platina shaped with plenty of promise over the same course and distance that day and, with the benefit of that outing and the same rider retained, looks primed to shed his maiden tag if building on that encouraging Highveld introduction.

The opposition does not look particularly strong and Sendai could be a possible banker in the Pick 6.
