When & Where
Australia will host the 2027 Rugby World Cup from 1 October to 13 November 2027. The tournament will run for six weeks and feature 52 matches across seven Australian host cities: Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth, Sydney, and Townsville.
Perth is set to host the opening match, while Sydney’s Stadium Australia will host the final, along with semi-finals and other key knockout games.
Format & Draw
A key change in 2027 is the expanded field: 24 teams instead of the previous 20. These 24 nations will be split into six pools of four teams each.
The top two teams from each pool will automatically advance to the Round of 16, along with the four best third-placed teams (based on points, then points difference, then tries difference).
This is the first time the Rugby World Cup will include a Round of 16 stage in its knockout phase.
To manage player workload, the pool stage has been slightly compressed: each team will play only three pool matches, and for finalists, the total number of games remains seven (three pool + Round of 16 + quarters + semis + final).
Qualification & Teams
Twelve teams from the 2023 World Cup automatically qualify. The remaining 12 spots are filled via regional qualification tournaments. A Final Qualification Tournament will be held in November 2025 in Dubai to determine the last team.
Notably, Canada has already qualified for the RWC 2027 after their campaign in the Pacific Nations Cup. Also, Uruguay clinched their spot by beating Chile on aggregate, becoming the second South American side with Argentina.
Draw Date & Seeding
The official draw for the pools is set for Wednesday, 3 December 2025, in Sydney, Australia. Teams will be seeded into four bands (1 to 4) based on World Rugby rankings after the November 2025 international window. Each pool will receive one team from each band, ensuring competitive balance across groups.
Why 2027 Is Different
The change from 4 pools of 5 to 6 pools of 4 means no team will sit out a round. All squads play every matchday.
Even though there are now 52 matches total (versus 48 in 2023), individual teams will not face a heavier match load thanks to fewer pool matches.
The tournament window is shorter, 43 days, compared to the longer formats in past editions.
Emphasis is being placed on player welfare and match intensity, as the structure is designed to maximise drama without undue strain.
