World Cup Round-Up: Biggest Winners & Talking Points From The Weekend

World Cup Weekend

The opening weekend of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered everything football fans could have hoped for. There were goals, upsets, statement performances and plenty of talking points as several of the tournament favourites got their campaigns underway. Here are the biggest stories from an action-packed weekend in North America.

Germany Deliver The Performance Of The Tournament

No team made a bigger statement than Germany. The four-time world champions produced the tournament’s most dominant performance so far, thrashing Curaçao 7-1 in their Group E opener.

Germany were ruthless from the opening whistle, overwhelming the World Cup debutants with their movement, pressing and clinical finishing. The result not only handed Germany three points but also provided a significant boost to their goal difference, which could prove crucial later in the group stage.

At a World Cup where many of the favourites have started cautiously, Germany’s emphatic victory immediately put the rest of the tournament on notice.

Brazil Held By Morocco

One of the most anticipated matches of the opening round saw Brazil and Morocco play out a 1-1 draw in Group C.

Brazil entered the tournament among the favourites to lift the trophy, but Morocco once again demonstrated why they are considered one of the most dangerous teams outside football’s traditional elite.

The Atlas Lions frustrated Brazil throughout large periods of the contest and showed the same defensive resilience that carried them to the semi-finals in Qatar. While Brazil enjoyed more possession, Morocco looked organised, disciplined and dangerous on the counter-attack.

The result reinforced the growing belief that Morocco could once again be Africa’s best hope of a deep World Cup run.

United States Make A Statement

The hosts could hardly have asked for a better start.

The United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 to claim one of the most impressive victories of the opening round.

With home support behind them, the Americans played with confidence and intensity, producing a performance that will significantly raise expectations heading into the remainder of the tournament.

A strong start is often critical for host nations, and the United States have immediately positioned themselves as one of the teams to watch.

Japan Show Their Quality

Japan may not have collected all three points, but their 2-2 draw against the Netherlands was another reminder that they should never be underestimated at major tournaments.

The Japanese twice responded to setbacks and earned a deserved share of the spoils against one of Europe’s strongest teams.

Having reached the knockout stages in recent tournaments, Japan once again look capable of causing problems for some of the competition’s biggest names.

Australia Produce An Early Surprise

One of the weekend’s biggest upsets came in Group D. Australia defeated Türkiye 2-0 despite many observers viewing the Turks as one of the tournament’s leading dark horses.

The Socceroos were disciplined defensively and clinical when opportunities presented themselves, securing a result that could prove hugely significant in the battle for qualification.

For Türkiye, it serves as an early reminder that reputations count for little at a World Cup.

Ecuador’s Unbeaten Run Ends

Few teams entered the tournament in better form than Ecuador.

La Tri arrived in North America on a 19-match unbeaten run and were widely tipped as one of the competition’s dark horses. However, that streak came to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast.

Despite the loss, Ecuador remained organised and competitive throughout the contest. With matches against Curaçao and Germany still to come, their qualification hopes remain very much alive.
