The Incredible Story Behind The Iconic Photo Of Lionel Messi & Baby Lamine Yamal

Messi Yamal

The Lionel Messi Lamine Yamal photo has become one of the most iconic images in football history. What was once an almost forgotten charity photograph has taken on an extraordinary new meaning as Argentina prepare to face Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

Nineteen years ago, a 20-year-old Lionel Messi gently held and bathed a baby during a fundraising photoshoot organised by the FC Barcelona Foundation. At the time, neither Messi nor anyone else could have imagined that the infant in his arms would one day become one of football’s brightest stars.

That baby was Lamine Yamal.

Now, as Messi prepares for what could be the final World Cup match of his legendary career, he will line up against the same boy he unknowingly cradled almost two decades ago. It is one of the most remarkable full-circle moments the sport has ever produced.

It All Started With A Charity Calendar

The famous photograph was never intended to become a piece of football history.

Back in late 2007, the FC Barcelona Foundation partnered with UNICEF and Catalan newspaper Diari SPORT to produce a charity calendar. The concept was simple: Barcelona’s first-team players would be photographed with young children from local families to raise money for vulnerable children through the Foundation’s social initiatives.

Messi, who was only 20 years old and just beginning his journey towards becoming one of the greatest footballers of all time, was assigned one particular family for the shoot. That family included five month old Lamine Yamal.

According to FC Barcelona, the families involved in the project were selected through a lottery organised in the Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró, where Yamal’s family lived. It was simply a community initiative designed to support charitable causes. Nobody involved thought they were witnessing the meeting of two future global superstars.

The Photoshoot Almost Never Happened

One of the most fascinating details about the story is that the shoot itself was far from straightforward.

Photographer Joan Monfort has since recalled that Messi was naturally shy at the time and initially looked uncomfortable posing with a baby he had never met. Holding a five-month-old infant in front of cameras was well outside the comfort zone of a young footballer who was still establishing himself in Barcelona’s first team.

To make the scene feel more natural, Monfort improvised by using a small plastic baby bath complete with a yellow rubber duck. The result was a series of photographs showing Messi carefully supporting and bathing baby Lamine before wrapping him in a towel.

At the time, they were simply charming charity photographs.

Today, they are priceless pieces of football history.

Forgotten For Nearly Two Decades

For years, the images sat largely unnoticed.

Messi went on to become Barcelona’s greatest ever player, winning countless trophies and rewriting football’s record books. Meanwhile, young Lamine Yamal was growing up in Rocafonda, dreaming of following in the footsteps of the very man who had unknowingly held him as a baby.

The photographs only resurfaced during UEFA Euro 2024, when Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, shared one of the images on social media with the caption: “The beginning of two legends.”

Within hours, the internet had rediscovered the remarkable connection.

Millions of football fans around the world were stunned that one of the sport’s greatest ever players had once posed with the teenager now being tipped as his successor.

From Idol To Opponent

What makes the story even more extraordinary is how their careers have unfolded.

Messi became the greatest player in Barcelona’s history, winning multiple Ballon d’Or awards, four UEFA Champions League titles with the club and finally lifting the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022.

Yamal, meanwhile, emerged from La Masia as Barcelona’s next generational talent. He broke record after record as a teenager, helped Spain win UEFA Euro 2024 and quickly established himself as one of the world’s most exciting young footballers. Throughout his rise, Messi remained one of his childhood idols.

Now, rather than simply following Messi’s path, Yamal has the opportunity to compete directly against him on football’s biggest stage.

A Symbol Of Football’s Changing Of The Guard

The image has become far more than a viral photograph.

It represents two generations of football greatness.

On one side is Messi, a player whose career has defined nearly two decades of world football and who is chasing one final piece of history with Argentina.

On the other is Yamal, the teenager many believe will become the next global superstar and the new face of both Barcelona and Spanish football.

Few sporting images have ever captured such a symbolic passing of the torch before either story had even been written.

The Perfect World Cup Final Storyline

Sunday’s FIFA World Cup final already promised to be unforgettable.

Spain, playing in their first World Cup final since 2010, will attempt to dethrone the defending champions. Argentina, inspired once again by Messi, are aiming to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup.

Yet beyond the tactics, the stars and the trophy, one photograph has added an emotional layer that nobody could have scripted.

Nineteen years ago, Lionel Messi gently held a baby during a charity event at Barcelona.

On Sunday, that same child will stand opposite him in a FIFA World Cup final.
