PSL 2026/27: Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns Prediction & Best Bets

Kaizer Chiefs Sundowns

Kaizer Chiefs’ perfect start to the new PSL season faces its biggest test yet when they welcome Mamelodi Sundowns to FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Amakhosi head into the heavyweight encounter sitting top of the early standings after winning their opening two league matches. Fernando Da Cruz’s side followed their 3-1 opening-day victory over Kruger United with a 2-0 home win against Sekhukhune United on Wednesday, making Chiefs the only team to have taken maximum points from their first two Premiership fixtures.

Sundowns started their league campaign a little later, but they also arrive with a 100% record. The Brazilians came from 2-1 down in the closing stages to claim a dramatic 3-2 victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday, having also beaten Polokwane City 3-2 after extra time in their MTN8 quarter-final three days earlier.

Saturday therefore gives us the first major meeting between two of South African football’s traditional Big Three this season, and an early indication of just how far Chiefs have progressed under Da Cruz.

Betting Preview

The mood around Kaizer Chiefs has changed considerably since the opening weekend.

A convincing 3-1 victory away to newly promoted Kruger United provided the perfect start to Da Cruz’s first league campaign in charge, only for some of that optimism to disappear when Golden Arrows knocked Amakhosi out of the MTN8 with a 1-0 quarter-final victory at FNB Stadium.

Their response was impressive.

Chiefs had to remain patient against Sekhukhune on Wednesday before Luke Baartman broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Substitute Mduduzi Shabalala added the second six minutes from time to secure a 2-0 victory and send Amakhosi clear at the top of the table.

Baartman is rapidly emerging as one of the stories of Chiefs’ young season. The 20-year-old has started all three of their competitive matches and Da Cruz has praised both his technical ability and versatility, viewing him as someone capable of operating across several attacking positions. New signing Langelihle Phili also impressed against Sekhukhune, giving Amakhosi further encouragement about their new-look attack.

However, Sundowns represent an entirely different examination.

Despite no longer being the defending Premiership champions after Orlando Pirates ended their long reign last season, Masandawana remain one of the deepest and most talented squads in South African football. Miguel Cardoso’s men have started the new campaign with consecutive victories and have already demonstrated the mentality that made them the country’s dominant force for so long.

That was particularly evident against TS Galaxy.

Sundowns trailed 2-1 heading towards the end of the match before substitute Sphelele Mkhulise scored twice late on, including the winner deep into stoppage time, to turn what looked like an opening-day defeat into a 3-2 victory.

There are weaknesses for Chiefs to target, though. Sundowns have conceded twice in each of their opening two competitive matches, with Cardoso particularly concerned by his team’s vulnerability from set-pieces.

That gives Amakhosi reason to believe they can hurt the visitors. The bigger question is whether they can restrict a Sundowns attack that has already scored six goals in two matches.

Recent Form & Stats

Chiefs enter Saturday’s clash having won two of their three competitive matches this season. Their league form is perfect, with five goals scored and only one conceded across victories over Kruger United and Sekhukhune. The only blemish was the 1-0 MTN8 defeat to Golden Arrows.

Kaizer Chiefs’ competitive results this season:

Kruger United 1-3 Kaizer Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 Golden Arrows – MTN8
Kaizer Chiefs 2-0 Sekhukhune United

Sundowns have played two competitive matches and won both by the same scoreline. Their 3-2 extra-time victory over Polokwane City secured progression to the MTN8 semi-finals before another 3-2 win against TS Galaxy got their PSL campaign off to a winning start.

Mamelodi Sundowns’ competitive results this season:

Mamelodi Sundowns 3-2 Polokwane City – MTN8, AET
TS Galaxy 2-3 Mamelodi Sundowns

The recent head-to-head record provides further encouragement for Chiefs.

Sundowns had dominated this fixture for several seasons, but Amakhosi have now avoided defeat in their last three meetings across all competitions. Chiefs famously eliminated Sundowns from the Nedbank Cup in 2025 before the two league encounters last season both finished level.

The first Premiership meeting of 2025/26 ended 0-0 at FNB Stadium, while the return fixture at Loftus Versfeld finished 1-1 in May. Overall, however, there is remarkably little separating these clubs historically: across 82 league meetings since 1985, Sundowns have won 30, Chiefs 29 and 23 have ended in draws, with both teams scoring exactly 86 goals.

There is also an interesting contrast developing between the teams this season. Chiefs have looked increasingly organised defensively and kept a clean sheet against Sekhukhune, whereas Sundowns have shown greater attacking potency but conceded four goals across their opening two competitive fixtures.

Something may have to give at FNB Stadium.
