Lionel Messi Calls Time On Legendary Argentina Career

One of the greatest chapters in football history has officially come to an end. Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international football at the age of 39, bringing down the curtain on an extraordinary 21-year career with Argentina.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner walks away as his country’s record appearance-maker and goalscorer, having scored 125 goals in 207 matches and, most importantly, finally delivered the World Cup that had eluded him for so long.

Messi confirmed his decision on Monday, just over a month after Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.

“It was a decision that hurt, and still hurts deep down, but I understand that the time has come,” Messi wrote in an emotional farewell.

From Heartbreak To Immortality

Messi’s relationship with international football wasn’t always the fairytale it eventually became.

For years, his astonishing success at Barcelona was contrasted with Argentina’s inability to win a major trophy. There was defeat to Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, followed by successive Copa America final losses in 2015 and 2016.

The latter proved so painful that Messi announced his international retirement for the first time.

Fortunately for Argentina, it didn’t last. He returned and eventually transformed his international story completely.

Messi finally lifted his first senior international trophy when Argentina beat Brazil in the 2021 Copa America final at the Maracana.

A year later came his crowning achievement. Messi inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, scoring seven goals during the tournament before lifting the trophy after an unforgettable final against France.

It was the moment that silenced perhaps the last remaining argument against his claim to being football’s greatest-ever player.

Another Copa America followed in 2024.

By then, the player once criticised for supposedly failing to reproduce his Barcelona brilliance for Argentina had become the heartbeat of one of the most successful periods in the national team’s history.

One Last Shot At Glory

There would be one final opportunity for the perfect farewell.

At 39, Messi led Argentina to another World Cup final this year as they attempted to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the trophy.

Spain denied them the fairytale.

Ferran Torres’ extra-time goal secured a 1-0 victory and left Messi agonisingly short of lifting the World Cup for a second time. Messi revealed that he actually wrote his retirement message two days after that defeat.

But tragedy away from football subsequently reinforced his decision.

His father, Jorge Messi, died in August at the age of 68 following an illness.

“Today, after what happened with my dad, I’m more convinced than before,” Messi wrote when finally publishing his farewell.

Nothing Left To Prove

There will inevitably be sadness that Messi’s international career ended with defeat rather than another trophy.

But perhaps that hardly matters. There is nothing left for Lionel Messi to prove in an Argentina shirt.

He leaves as the country’s most-capped player.

Its record goalscorer.

A two-time Copa America champion.

And, above everything else, the captain who ended Argentina’s 36-year wait for a World Cup.

His international journey encompassed almost every possible emotion, expectation, criticism, heartbreak, resignation, redemption and ultimately immortality.

The boy from Rosario spent years chasing the one trophy that seemed determined to escape him.

When he finally held the World Cup above his head in Qatar, the journey felt complete.

Everything since has been an encore.

Messi’s football career isn’t over yet, with the Argentine continuing at club level with Inter Miami.

But the famous blue and white No 10 has been worn by Lionel Messi for the final time.

Argentina now has to contemplate something it hasn’t experienced for more than two decades.
