The Premier League delivered another weekend of shocks as champions Arsenal and London rivals Chelsea both suffered crushing 3-0 defeats, allowing Manchester City to take full advantage in the early title race.

Chelsea’s defensive problems were brutally exposed by Brentford in Friday night’s West London derby before Brighton produced arguably the result of the weekend by dismantling Arsenal at the Amex Stadium.
Manchester City responded by beating Sunderland 5-3 in an eight-goal thriller, Liverpool edged Bournemouth 1-0, while Tottenham’s nightmare start continued with a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
However, there is only one place to start.
Arsenal Humbled By Brilliant Brighton
Arsenal travelled to Brighton with a perfect Premier League record and left the south coast having suffered their heaviest league defeat in more than three years. Mikel Arteta’s men had won their opening four matches and conceded just one goal, but their previously formidable defence was torn apart in a stunning 3-0 defeat.
Pascal Gross opened the scoring in the 31st minute before highly-rated Greek youngster Charalampos Kostoulas doubled Brighton’s advantage shortly before half-time.
Any hopes of an Arsenal comeback disappeared nine minutes after the restart when Chema Andres added a third.
It could have been even worse.
Brighton created enough opportunities to win by a greater margin, with Arsenal struggling to impose themselves at either end of the pitch. Arteta offered no excuses afterwards, admitting Brighton deserved their victory and had taught his side a lesson. The result was particularly surprising because of what had come before it.
Arsenal had looked formidable during the opening weeks of their title defence, winning four from four and demonstrating the defensive solidity that has become one of their defining qualities under Arteta.
Brighton changed all of that in 90 remarkable minutes.
It was Arsenal’s first defeat by three goals in the Premier League since May 2023 – remarkably, another 3-0 loss against Brighton. More importantly, the defeat cost the Gunners top spot.
Chelsea’s Defensive Problems Return
If Arsenal’s result was the biggest shock of Saturday, Chelsea had already provided the warning on Friday night.
Xabi Alonso’s side were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, extending their winless Premier League run to three matches. After a goalless opening half, the contest unravelled quickly for the Blues.
Jaidon Anthony put Brentford ahead before Igor Thiago doubled the advantage and Fabio Carvalho completed a miserable evening for Chelsea. The manner of the collapse will concern Alonso as much as the scoreline.
Chelsea’s defensive vulnerability has been one of the recurring themes of their early season. They have now conceded at least twice in each of Alonso’s first five Premier League matches, while their problems defending set-pieces were exposed again by Brentford.
Alonso was particularly critical of his team’s mentality after falling behind, saying Chelsea had lost their consistency and lacked the competitive edge required during a dismal second-half display.
After an encouraging start to the campaign, the momentum has disappeared quickly.
Chelsea have now gone three Premier League games without a victory, and the 3-0 defeat served as another reminder that their exciting attacking potential must be accompanied by significant defensive improvement if they are to challenge near the top.
City Capitalise On Arsenal Slip
Arsenal’s defeat opened the door for Manchester City, and they walked straight through it. Enzo Maresca’s men survived a surprisingly spirited Sunderland challenge to win a chaotic encounter 5-3 and move above Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey remarkably scored a hat-trick at the Etihad, but even that wasn’t enough to deny City.
The result maintained City’s perfect Premier League start and, following Arsenal’s defeat, moved them into pole position heading into the international break.
It wasn’t City’s most convincing performance, particularly defensively, but weekends like this can become important in title races.
Arsenal dropped three points.
City didn’t.
Liverpool Grind Out Another Victory
Liverpool also took advantage of Arsenal and Chelsea stumbling by earning a hard-fought 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth.
Andoni Iraola returned to the Vitality Stadium to face his former club and left with all three points as Liverpool’s defence provided the foundation for victory.
Young centre-back Jérémy Jacquet impressed alongside Virgil van Dijk as the Reds kept a clean sheet and found a way to win despite not producing their most fluent attacking performance.
After being held to a goalless draw by Fulham the previous weekend, it was an important response.
Liverpool may not yet be firing on all cylinders under Iraola, but victories on difficult away days will keep them firmly involved near the top of the table.
Tottenham’s Nightmare Continues
While Arsenal and Chelsea endured weekends to forget, things are even worse across north London at Tottenham.
Spurs suffered another damaging defeat as Aston Villa came away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with a 3-2 victory.
The result leaves Tottenham at the bottom of the Premier League table with just two points from their opening five matches.
Pressure is consequently beginning to build around Roberto De Zerbi after a dreadful opening to the campaign.
For Villa, however, the victory represented another encouraging result as they continued their recovery following an inconsistent start.
Coventry Finally Have Something To Celebrate
One of the weekend’s best stories came at the City Ground.
After losing their opening four matches without scoring, Coventry City finally ended their miserable start by beating Nottingham Forest 1-0.
Jay Dasilva scored the decisive goal to secure Coventry’s first Premier League victory of the campaign and their first top-flight win in 25 years.
Elsewhere, Everton edged 10-man Ipswich Town 1-0, Newcastle United defeated Hull City 2-1 and Leeds United played out a goalless draw with Crystal Palace. Manchester United’s difficult start also continued as they needed a late deflected Matheus Cunha equaliser to escape Craven Cottage with a 1-1 draw against Fulham.
A Weekend That Changed The Early Picture
Five games into a Premier League season is far too early to draw definitive conclusions, but this weekend provided the first major shake-up of the campaign.
Arsenal had looked almost untouchable through their opening four matches. Four victories and a near-perfect defensive record had suggested the champions were ready to pick up exactly where they left off.
Then Brighton dismantled them.
For Chelsea, the questions are different. Their 3-0 defeat wasn’t an isolated poor performance but the continuation of a worrying defensive trend. Five league matches under Alonso have now produced five games in which Chelsea have conceded at least twice.
And while two of London’s biggest clubs lick their wounds, Manchester City are the biggest beneficiaries.
City did what title contenders are supposed to do when their rivals stumble: they won.
Arsenal will have the international break to digest their first defeat of the season, while Chelsea have significantly more to fix after three league games without a victory.
One weekend doesn’t define a Premier League season.
But after two stunning 3-0 defeats, both Arsenal and Chelsea suddenly have plenty to think about.
