AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: South Africa vs Guinea Prediction

The Pitso Mosimane era officially begins on Saturday when Bafana Bafana host Guinea in a crucial opening 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 SAST, with South Africa looking to make the perfect start to life under their returning head coach. The significance of this fixture is heightened by the unusual makeup of Group D. With Kenya automatically qualifying as co-hosts, only the highest-placed team outside of Kenya will join them at AFCON 2027, making the meetings between Bafana and Guinea particularly important.

Mosimane has largely retained the foundations built by Hugo Broos while introducing several fresh faces, but his first assignment presents an immediate test against a Guinea side spearheaded by Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy.

Mosimane couldn’t have asked for a much more significant fixture to begin his latest spell as Bafana coach.

South Africa reached the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup under Broos, and rather than ripping up what his predecessor built, Mosimane has maintained much of that core. Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena, Themba Zwane, Relebohile Mofokeng and Sphephelo Sithole are among the familiar names retained, while five uncapped players were included in his original final squad.

There are some important absentees, though.

Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khuliso Mudau, Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa are unavailable through injury, while Lebohang Maboe has also been ruled out and replaced by Tshepang Moremi. The depth Mosimane has inherited means Bafana still have plenty of quality available despite those setbacks.

Guinea have problems of their own.

Coach Paulo Duarte is without several established players, including Naby Keita, Mohamed Mady Camara, Cheick Oumar Conde, Morgan Guilavogui and Issiaga Sylla. Ilaix Moriba, Madiou Keita and Saidou Sow have returned to the squad, but there is little doubt about who represents the visitors’ biggest threat.

Serhou Guirassy will lead the line and demand Bafana’s full attention. Mosimane himself highlighted the Borussia Dortmund striker’s goalscoring quality and aerial strength ahead of Saturday’s game.

Containing Guirassy will be especially important with Bafana missing Mbokazi and Mudau.

However, South Africa should enter the contest with confidence. Home advantage, a strong midfield and greater continuity within the squad give them reasons for optimism, while the excitement surrounding Mosimane’s return should create a lively atmosphere at Orlando Stadium.

The stakes may encourage caution, though. Neither side will want to immediately lose ground to its biggest rival for the group’s available qualification spot, and Guinea possess enough quality to punish Bafana if the hosts become too adventurous.

South Africa don’t necessarily need to overwhelm Guinea. A disciplined performance and three points would represent an ideal beginning to the new era.
