Bafana Bafana Announce Preliminary Squad for Panama Friendlies

Bafana Friendlies

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has announced a preliminary squad ahead of South Africa’s two international friendlies against Panama later this month, as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two matches will take place on 27 March at Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban and 31 March at DHL Stadium in Cape Town, offering South African fans a chance to see the national team in action before the World Cup kicks off in June.

Broos has selected a large preliminary group of around 38 players, which will later be trimmed to a smaller final squad for the matches. The squad reflects the Belgian coach’s desire to test both experienced players and emerging talent as he finalises his plans for the global showpiece.

Returns, New Faces and Notable Omissions

The preliminary squad features several familiar names from recent Bafana Bafana campaigns, including captain Ronwen Williams, who continues to lead the team as South Africa’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Several players have also returned to the fold after missing previous selections. Midfielder Jayden Adams, winger Bongokuhle Hlongwane, and attacker Thapelo Maseko are among those back in contention.

Another headline inclusion is Olwethu Makhanya, the Philadelphia Union defender who many observers believe deserved a call-up earlier.

However, the squad announcement also featured some notable omissions. Midfielder Sipho Mbule, along with players such as Siyabonga Ngezana, Bathusi Aubaas, and Shandre Campbell, were not included in the preliminary selection.

These decisions underline the competitive battle for places in the national team as Broos continues to evaluate his options.
