Mokoena To The Rescue
Bafana Bafana could hardly have asked for a worse start.
Czechia took the lead inside six minutes through Michal Sadilek after South Africa switched off defensively, leaving Hugo Broos’ side chasing the game for almost the entire afternoon.
To their credit, South Africa responded well.
After struggling to create clear opportunities in the first half, Bafana gradually grew into the contest and began to dominate possession. However, a combination of poor finishing and Czech resistance threatened to condemn them to a second consecutive defeat.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 83rd minute.
A handball by Pavel Sulc handed South Africa a lifeline from the penalty spot, and Mokoena stepped up to calmly convert the spot-kick and level the scores at 1-1.
The goal kept South Africa’s World Cup campaign alive.
The Cost Of The Comeback
Unfortunately for Bafana Bafana, the equaliser came at a price.
Earlier in the match, Mokoena received a yellow card, triggering a suspension that will rule him out of South Africa’s decisive final group game against South Korea.
That is a huge blow.
Mokoena has been one of South Africa’s most influential players throughout the qualification campaign and once again proved his importance against Czechia. Not only did he score the crucial equaliser, but he was arguably Bafana’s best performer on the day.
With Themba Zwane already unavailable through suspension, Hugo Broos will now be forced to reshuffle his midfield for the biggest game of South Africa’s tournament.
All Roads Lead To South Korea
The draw leaves South Africa with one point from two matches following their opening defeat to Mexico. Czechia also have one point, while Mexico sit top of Group A after beating South Korea 1-0.
The equation is now relatively simple.
South Africa must beat South Korea to have a realistic chance of reaching the Round of 32. A draw is unlikely to be enough, while defeat would certainly end Bafana’s World Cup journey.
The challenge will not be easy.
South Korea opened their tournament by defeating Czechia and remain one of Asia’s strongest sides, boasting pace, technical quality and plenty of experience at World Cups.
