Thapelo Maseko Joins FC Copenhagen From Sundowns

Bafana Bafana winger Thapelo Maseko has completed a permanent move from Mamelodi Sundowns to Danish giants FC Copenhagen, signing a four-year contract with the club.

Copenhagen officially unveiled the 22-year-old on Tuesday, confirming his arrival from Sundowns. The transfer is reportedly worth around €1.5 million, approximately R28 million, bringing an end to Maseko’s three-year spell with Masandawana.

The move represents another major step in Maseko’s career after he spent the second half of last season on loan at AEL Limassol in Cyprus. Having fallen down the pecking order at Sundowns, the spell helped him rediscover regular football and put himself back in the shop window for a permanent move to Europe.

Maseko Earns Major European Move

Maseko first established himself as one of South African football’s most exciting young players at SuperSport United before joining Sundowns in 2023. He made an immediate impact at Chloorkop, playing an important role in their inaugural African Football League triumph and finishing the competition as its joint top scorer and best player.

His progress subsequently stalled as opportunities became harder to come by, but his move to Cyprus provided a route back into regular first-team football. His performances for Bafana Bafana also helped strengthen his reputation, with Copenhagen highlighting his recent winning goal against South Korea at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when announcing his signing.

Now comes the biggest challenge of his club career.

Copenhagen are one of Scandinavia’s biggest clubs and regular participants in UEFA competition. Maseko has already spoken about his excitement at the prospect of playing Champions League football, describing the transfer as a massive opportunity in his career.

Another Bafana Star Heads To Europe

The transfer is also encouraging news for Bafana Bafana. At 22, Maseko still has significant room to develop, and regular football in Denmark could help him establish himself as an increasingly important member of the national team.

Copenhagen’s official announcement described Maseko as a left-footed winger with pace and attacking qualities, and the four-year contract suggests the Danish club view him as more than a short-term addition.
