Heavyweights Collide As Pirates, Sundowns Set Up Blockbuster MTN8 Final

South African football has the MTN8 final it wanted. Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns booked their places in the showpiece over the weekend, but they could hardly have taken more contrasting routes to get there.

The Buccaneers marched into a fifth consecutive MTN8 final with a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory over Sekhukhune United, while the Brazilians had to dig deep to overturn a first-leg deficit and squeeze past a spirited Golden Arrows on the away-goals rule.

Now, two of the country’s heavyweights are set for a blockbuster battle for the first major trophy of the season.

Pirates Keep Their Drive For Five Alive

Pirates’ extraordinary stranglehold on the MTN8 shows no signs of loosening.

The four-time defending champions took a 1-0 advantage into Saturday’s second leg against Sekhukhune at Orlando Amstel Arena and promptly turned what had looked like a potentially tricky tie into a procession.

Thapelo Mokobodi and Gamphani Lungu struck within minutes of each other before half-time, with Yanela Mbuthuma supplying both assists, before Kamogelo Sebelebele put the finishing touch on an emphatic 3-0 victory in stoppage time.

That completed a 4-0 aggregate triumph and sent Pirates into the MTN8 final for an unprecedented fifth consecutive season.

More impressive than the scoreline was the manner in which the Buccaneers handled the occasion.

They knew Sekhukhune had to chase the game and punished them accordingly. Mbuthuma’s pace and work rate caused problems, the new faces continued to settle into Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side, and Pirates once again looked completely at home in knockout football.

It is becoming difficult to separate the MTN8 from the Buccaneers.

Pirates have won the competition four years running, lifting the trophy in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. No club had previously managed four consecutive MTN8 triumphs, and they are now just one victory away from stretching that remarkable sequence to five.

Whatever changes happen around the squad, the winning culture in this competition remains.

Sundowns Show Their Championship Character

If Pirates cruised into the final, Sundowns had to fight their way there.

Masandawana travelled to Durban on Sunday facing the very real possibility of elimination after Golden Arrows stunned them 1-0 in the opening leg.

Miguel Cardoso’s men needed a response, and they produced one.

Cassius Mailula struck after 31 minutes to wipe out Arrows’ aggregate advantage, but the hosts hit back through Junior Dion in the second half to put Sundowns under enormous pressure.

That was when the Brazilians showed their quality.

Marcelo Allende restored their lead before substitute Antonio van Wyk made it 3-1 on the afternoon. Philani Khumalo’s stoppage-time goal ensured a frantic finish, but Sundowns survived to win 3-2 and advance on away goals after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.

It was hardly straightforward, but cup football rarely is.

Sundowns were asked a serious question after losing the opening leg on home soil, and they found an answer away from home.

Perhaps that will make the victory even sweeter for Cardoso.

For all the quality and resources at Sundowns’ disposal, the MTN8 has proved surprisingly difficult to conquer in recent years. Their last triumph came in 2021, while Pirates have subsequently turned the tournament into their personal playground.

Ending that run would therefore carry significance far beyond simply adding another trophy to the cabinet.
