Relebohile Mofokeng Scores Again As Bright Start In Belgium Continues

Relebohile Mofokeng continues to make his mark in Belgium after scoring his second goal for Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday night.

The Bafana Bafana star found the back of the net in Union SG’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Sint-Truiden, marking the occasion with a goal on his first Belgian Pro League start.

Louis Patris opened the scoring for the visitors in the 23rd minute before Kevin Mac Allister doubled their advantage 10 minutes after the break. Mofokeng then put the result beyond doubt in the 63rd minute, finding the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area to make it 3-0.

The 21-year-old was substituted shortly afterwards, but his work was already done as Union SG secured their third league victory of the new campaign and moved up to second place on the table with 10 points.

Mofokeng Making His Mark In Belgium

The goal continues an encouraging start to Mofokeng’s European adventure following his move from Orlando Pirates in July.

He needed little time to open his account in Belgium, scoring as a substitute in Union SG’s emphatic 5-1 victory over Westerlo on the opening weekend of the league season.

His latest strike means Mofokeng now has two goals in four Belgian Pro League appearances, despite Wednesday night being his first league start.

The South African youngster has had to be patient for regular minutes since arriving in Belgium, but performances like this will only strengthen his case for a more prominent role.

Having established himself as one of South African football’s brightest talents at Pirates, the next challenge was always going to be proving that his ability could translate to European football.

The early signs are certainly promising.

Another Big Test Awaits

Mofokeng and Union SG will have little time to celebrate Wednesday’s victory, with an early-season top-of-the-table showdown awaiting them this weekend.

They host league leaders Charleroi on Saturday, with Union SG currently two points behind their opponents.

Whether Mofokeng has done enough to earn another start remains to be seen, but after scoring twice in limited league minutes, he is certainly making it increasingly difficult to leave him out.

For South African football supporters following his progress closely, that is exactly the start they would have hoped for.
