Bafana Bafana’s resurgence continues, with South Africa climbing to 48th in the provisional FIFA world rankings following their impressive victory over Egypt.
Pitso Mosimane’s men completed a perfect international window by beating the Pharaohs 1-0 in Cairo on Sunday, with Puso Dithejane scoring the winner on his senior international debut. The result followed victories over Guinea and Eritrea and has pushed Bafana back into the world’s top 50.
South Africa started the international window ranked 54th before a 2-1 win over Guinea moved them up the standings. A dominant 5-0 victory over Eritrea then lifted Bafana to 49th provisionally before the statement win against Egypt took them another place higher.
The rise to 48th represents Bafana’s highest position in around 15 years, underlining the remarkable progress the national team has made in recent years. South Africa are also currently among the top 10-ranked African nations.
It has also been a dream return for Mosimane.
Bafana have won all three matches since “Jingles” returned to the national team, scoring eight goals and conceding just once. Victories over Guinea and Eritrea strengthened their position in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying before the win over Egypt provided another significant boost to their FIFA ranking points.
The latest rise continues an impressive turnaround for a national team that spent years well outside the world’s top 50.
Bafana’s 48th position remains provisional, with FIFA scheduled to publish its next official men’s rankings on Wednesday, 7 October.
But regardless of where the final calculation leaves them, the trajectory is clear.
