Rabada Ruled Out As Proteas Name Playing XI For First Australia Test

Proteas Playing XI

The Proteas have confirmed their playing XI for Friday’s first Test against Australia at Kingsmead in Durban, with Kagiso Rabada ruled out and Anrich Nortje making his long-awaited return to Test cricket.

Captain Temba Bavuma announced the team on Thursday, confirming that South Africa will be without their premier fast bowler as he continues recovering from a hamstring injury sustained during pre-season training.

Rabada had been racing against time to prove his fitness, but the Proteas have opted against risking him in the opening encounter of the three-match series.

His absence is a significant blow, particularly given his outstanding record against Australia and his match-winning performances in last year’s World Test Championship final.

Nortje Returns After Three-Year Absence

Rabada’s absence opens the door for Nortje, who will play his first Test since March 2023.

The express paceman will partner Marco Jansen with the new ball, while all-rounder Wiaan Mulder provides a third seam-bowling option.

South Africa have also made the interesting decision to select two specialist spinners, with Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer both included in the starting XI.

The selection suggests the Proteas expect the Kingsmead surface to offer assistance to spin as the match progresses, while also backing Nortje’s express pace to trouble Australia’s batters.

A Massive Test For The World Champions

The batting line-up features a familiar core, with Markram and Rickelton opening, Bedingham occupying the crucial No. 3 position and Bavuma anchoring the middle order.

Stubbs retains his place at No. 5, while Mulder and Verreynne provide additional batting depth before the bowlers.

South Africa will be determined to build on their historic five-wicket victory over Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s, but the absence of Rabada makes an already difficult assignment even tougher.

The spotlight will fall on Nortje, who has an opportunity to remind the cricketing world of his devastating pace after more than three years away from Test cricket.

With Australia boasting one of the world’s strongest bowling attacks, the Proteas will need their senior batters to deliver and their bowling combination to justify the selectors’ faith.

The first Test gets underway at 09:30 SAST on Friday, 9 October, at Kingsmead Stadium in Durban.
