Australia Thrash The Proteas By 214 Runs To Take 1-0 Series Lead

Australia Beat Proteas

Australia beat the Proteas by a commanding 214 runs on the fifth and final day of the opening Test at Kingsmead in Durban on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match Test series.

The visitors completed their victory during the second session of Day 5, with Josh Hazlewood producing a devastating bowling performance to dismantle the Proteas’ resistance and seal an emphatic result.

South Africa had entered the final day facing an enormous challenge after being set a target of 421 runs, but a determined partnership between Aiden Markram and Wiaan Mulder briefly raised hopes of salvaging a draw.

However, Australia’s relentless bowling attack ultimately proved too strong, with Hazlewood claiming career-best figures of 6/49 to ensure the tourists began their South African tour with a convincing victory.

Renshaw Masterclass Puts Australia In Control

Australia’s victory was built on an outstanding batting performance from Matt Renshaw, who dominated the Proteas’ bowling attack throughout the opening Test.

The left-handed batter produced a magnificent 190 in Australia’s first innings, helping the visitors post an imposing total of 390 and establish a strong position in the contest.

South Africa responded with 284 in their first innings, leaving Australia with a valuable 106-run advantage heading into the second half of the match.

Renshaw continued his impressive form in Australia’s second innings, contributing another 82 runs as the visitors piled further pressure on the hosts.

His remarkable match aggregate of 272 runs proved decisive, earning him the Player of the Match award and underlining his importance to Australia’s success.

Captain Pat Cummins also played an influential role with the bat, launching a series of powerful sixes as Australia accelerated towards a declaration.

The visitors eventually declared their second innings on 314/6, setting South Africa a daunting target of 421 runs to win.

With the Kingsmead surface beginning to offer additional turn and uneven bounce, the Proteas faced a difficult assignment against an experienced Australian bowling attack.

Hazlewood Destroys Proteas’ Hopes On Day 5

South Africa began the final day on 102/4, still requiring another 319 runs for an unlikely victory and needing to survive three sessions to secure a draw.

Markram and Mulder provided stubborn resistance during the morning session, frustrating Australia’s bowlers with a patient fifth-wicket partnership.

Markram occupied the crease for almost six hours on his way to a determined 75, while Mulder contributed 29 from 110 deliveries as the pair attempted to take the contest deeper into the final day.

Their partnership briefly threatened to deny Australia victory, but Hazlewood eventually produced the breakthrough the visitors desperately needed.

Mulder was dismissed after gloving a delivery down the leg side, with wicketkeeper Alex Carey completing a spectacular one-handed diving catch.

That dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse as Australia seized control of the contest.

Kyle Verreynne departed shortly afterwards, edging Matt Renshaw to Steve Smith at slip, before Hazlewood exploited the second new ball to devastating effect.

Marco Jansen offered further resistance with 35, but Hazlewood eventually breached his defence as the Proteas’ hopes faded.

South Africa lost their final four wickets for just five runs, with Hazlewood finishing with exceptional figures of 6/49 to complete Australia’s 214-run victory.

The result was a fitting reward for Australia’s disciplined bowling performance, with the tourists maintaining pressure throughout the final innings despite South Africa’s determined efforts to save the match.

Proteas Left With Plenty To Improve

For South Africa, the defeat represents a disappointing start to the three-match series, particularly after the hosts showed periods of promise during the contest.

Temba Bavuma’s side struggled to convert opportunities into sustained momentum, with Australia’s superior batting performances ultimately creating a gap that proved too difficult to overcome.

The Proteas will take encouragement from Markram’s determined final-innings performance, but their inability to build substantial partnerships remains a concern.

South Africa will also reflect on missed opportunities with the ball, particularly their failure to contain Renshaw, whose outstanding contributions in both innings helped Australia dictate the match.

With the series now on the line, Bavuma and his teammates face an important few days as they prepare for the second Test.
