The UEFA Champions League returns next week, and some of the world’s most lethal finishers will once again battle for the competition’s top goalscorer crown.

Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe heads the BetJets market at 4.50 after finishing as the Champions League’s leading marksman last season.
Harry Kane is his closest challenger at 8.00, followed by Erling Haaland at 9.00, while Ousmane Dembele and Jude Bellingham complete the top five in the betting.
We assess the leading contenders ahead of the 2026/27 Champions League.
Kylian Mbappe – 4.50
It’s difficult to start anywhere else. Mbappe enters the new Champions League campaign as the defending top goalscorer after finding the net 15 times in just 11 appearances for Real Madrid last season.
Remarkably, 13 of those goals came during the league phase, a competition record.
The French superstar scored doubles against Marseille, Monaco and Benfica, netted a hat-trick against Kairat Almaty and incredibly scored all four of Real Madrid’s goals in a 4-3 victory over Olympiacos.
It continued Mbappe’s extraordinary Champions League scoring record and secured him the competition’s top-scorer honour for the second time. His prospects this season are helped by a league-phase draw that offers several attractive opportunities.
Real Madrid begin against Inter at the Bernabeu before facing Roma, RB Leipzig, AEK Athens, PSV, Arsenal, LASK and Shakhtar Donetsk.
While there are difficult assignments in there, Mbappe will surely look at some of those fixtures as opportunities to build a substantial goal tally before the knockout rounds even begin.
His price is short, but there’s little mystery surrounding why.
Harry Kane – 8.00
If anyone can deny Mbappe consecutive top-scorer crowns, Harry Kane looks an obvious candidate.
The Bayern Munich striker came agonisingly close last season, scoring 14 Champions League goals to finish just one behind the Frenchman. That represented the most goals ever scored by an English player in a single Champions League campaign.
Kane’s overall record in the competition is equally impressive.
He has scored 54 times in 70 Champions League appearances, including an outstanding 33 goals in 38 games since joining Bayern.
And the German champions have been handed some very inviting league-phase fixtures.
Bayern begin at home against Bodø/Glimt before facing Norwegian champions Viking away. They will also host Slavia Prague and Real Betis, alongside tougher meetings with Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Lille and Manchester United.
Those opening fixtures in particular could give Kane an opportunity to establish himself near the top of the scoring charts immediately.
He was only one goal away from Mbappe last season.
At 8.00 compared with the favourite’s 4.50, Kane makes a compelling case.
Erling Haaland – 9.00
Few players in world football are better suited to a top-goalscorer market than Erling Haaland. The Manchester City striker’s Champions League numbers are absurd.
Haaland has scored 57 goals in just 58 appearances in the competition, putting him close to averaging a goal per game.
He has also won this award before, scoring 12 times during City’s triumphant 2022/23 campaign after previously leading the competition with 10 goals for Borussia Dortmund in 2020/21.
Last season was relatively quiet by his extraordinary standards. Haaland scored eight times as City failed to make a deep run in the competition.
That underlines one of the most important factors when betting on the Golden Boot: longevity.
The further a player’s team progresses, the more opportunities he has to score.
City’s league-phase schedule includes difficult matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, but also meetings with Porto, AEK Athens, Leipzig, Napoli, Lens and Sporting CP.
If City improve on last season’s European campaign, Haaland should be right in the Golden Boot conversation.
At 9.00, he offers a significantly higher price than Mbappe despite possessing one of the greatest scoring records in Champions League history.
Ousmane Dembele – 13.00
Ousmane Dembele presents a different proposition to the three players ahead of him.
The PSG star isn’t an orthodox centre-forward in the mould of Kane or Haaland, but his transformation into a consistent goalscorer has been one of the defining features of his career in Paris.
Dembele scored eight Champions League goals last season as PSG successfully defended their European crown.
He now has 28 goals in 79 appearances in the competition, with 18 of those coming since joining the French giants.
The obvious attraction is PSG themselves.
Backing a player from a team expected to make another deep run provides the possibility of additional knockout matches, and the defending champions will once again expect to challenge for the trophy.
Their league-phase schedule also starts favourably, with Slovan Bratislava visiting Paris on Matchday 1.
Manchester City and Barcelona follow, while PSG will also face Villarreal, Roma, Aston Villa, Como and Galatasaray.
The concern is that PSG have several players capable of sharing the goals.
That makes Dembele less predictable than a focal-point striker such as Kane or Haaland.
Still, at 13.00, the price compensates for some of that uncertainty.
Jude Bellingham – 15.00
Jude Bellingham is undoubtedly the most interesting name among the five favourites.
Not because of his ability, that’s beyond question, but because he isn’t primarily a striker.
The Real Madrid midfielder has scored 15 goals in 56 Champions League appearances, an excellent return for a player operating from midfield but significantly below the scoring rates of Mbappe, Kane and Haaland.
That makes his position at 15.00 intriguing.
Bellingham has demonstrated that he can produce goals on the biggest European stage and scored in each of his first four Champions League matches for Real Madrid.
He also has the advantage of playing for a club expected to reach the latter stages of the competition.
But there’s an obvious obstacle standing in his way of the Golden Boot.
His name is Kylian Mbappe.
Bellingham and Mbappe are effectively competing for goals within the same Real Madrid side, and the Frenchman remains their primary attacking weapon.
For Bellingham to finish as the competition’s leading scorer, he would likely need an exceptional goalscoring season from midfield while simultaneously outscoring his own teammate.
At 15.00, the potential reward is attractive.
The challenge is considerable.
