Calling one of Europe’s biggest clubs Champions League winners might not sound particularly daring, but Barcelona haven’t lifted the trophy since 2015. They’ve come close under Hansi Flick without getting over the line, and after another painful European exit last season, this could finally be the campaign in which the Catalan giants return to the summit of European football.

The Missing Piece Of Flick’s Barcelona Project
Barcelona have already established themselves as the dominant domestic force in Spain under Flick.
The German led Barca to a domestic treble in his first season in charge in 2024/25 before retaining LaLiga in 2025/26. Last season was particularly impressive at home, with Barcelona winning all 19 of their league matches at the Camp Nou.
Europe has been a different story.
Barcelona reached the Champions League semi-finals in Flick’s first season before going out to Inter in a dramatic tie. They returned with serious ambitions last season but fell short again, losing to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Rodri made almost 300 appearances during seven outstanding years at Manchester City, winning nine domestic trophies and scoring the goal that secured City’s first Champions League title against Inter in 2023. He has also won the European Championship, World Cup and Nations League with Spain.
That pedigree matters.

Then there’s Lamine Yamal.
It feels strange to say that a player who has already established himself among world football’s biggest stars could still be getting better, but Yamal is only 19.
Last season, he became the youngest player ever to reach 30 Champions League appearances and finished Barcelona’s European campaign with six goals and four assists.
He has already started the new domestic season in dangerous form, too.
Barcelona’s 5-2 victory over Rayo Vallecano saw Yamal score twice, while Raphinha also grabbed a brace as Flick’s attack continued to demonstrate just how difficult it can be to contain.
At this stage, opponents know exactly what Yamal wants to do.
Stopping him is another matter.
The Champions League has historically been shaped by superstar attackers capable of deciding knockout ties almost single-handedly. Barcelona have one of those players, and he may not even be close to reaching his ceiling yet.

There Are Goals Everywhere
Barcelona’s attacking potential extends well beyond Yamal.
Raphinha has continued to flourish under Flick, while Anthony Gordon adds another direct threat capable of stretching defences and attacking space.
The departure of Robert Lewandowski means Barcelona enter a new era at centre-forward, but it has also encouraged Flick to find different solutions in attack. Raphinha has already demonstrated his ability to operate centrally, while Gabriel Jesus gives the coach another experienced option.
More importantly, Barcelona don’t rely exclusively on a traditional No. 9 to create chances.
Yamal can decide games from the right. Raphinha can score from several positions. Gordon offers pace and directness, while Pedri can unlock defensive structures from midfield.
When Barcelona find their rhythm, opponents can spend entire matches trying to work out where the next threat is coming from.

Flick Knows How To Win This Competition
Barcelona also have something on the touchline that shouldn’t be underestimated: a Champions League-winning coach.
Flick masterminded Bayern Munich’s extraordinary 2019/20 campaign, when the German giants completed the treble and won every Champions League match they played.
He therefore understands exactly what is required to navigate the latter stages of this competition.
Barcelona’s recent European disappointments have also given him plenty of information about his current team.
The defeat to Inter two seasons ago demonstrated the danger of losing control in chaotic knockout matches. Last season’s elimination against Atletico provided another lesson in how brutally efficiency can decide tight European ties.

Barcelona’s attacking approach under Flick comes with risk. Their commitment to playing high up the pitch can leave space behind the defence, particularly against opponents with elite pace in transition.
That vulnerability becomes considerably more dangerous against the calibre of opposition they will eventually encounter in the knockout rounds.
There’s also formidable competition.
PSG are chasing a third consecutive Champions League crown, Arsenal reached last season’s final, Bayern remain perennial contenders and Real Madrid can never be discounted in this competition. Manchester City also have Erling Haaland leading another attempt at European glory.
Barcelona will have to overcome at least one, and probably several, of Europe’s strongest teams if they are going to lift the trophy.
