Kohli’s decision comes shortly after fellow Indian stalwart Rohit Sharma also retired from Test cricket, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket. In his heartfelt message, Kohli reflected on the personal significance of Test cricket.
Throughout his Test career, Kohli played 123 matches, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 46.9, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He stands as India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests, behind legends Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Sunil Gavaskar.
Kohli’s tenure as Test captain from 2014 to 2022 was marked by significant achievements. Under his leadership, India secured 40 wins out of 68 matches, making him the most successful Indian Test captain and the fourth overall globally. His aggressive and passionate approach redefined India’s Test cricket ethos, leading the team to the World Test Championship finals in 2021 and 2023.
While he has stepped away from Test cricket, he remains available for One Day Internationals and continues to play in the Indian Premier League for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His departure from the Test arena leaves a significant void in the Indian team as they prepare for upcoming challenges, including a five-match Test series against England, which starts next month.
Tributes have poured in from across the cricketing world, acknowledging Kohli’s immense contributions to the sport.
Kohli’s retirement marks the end of a significant chapter in Indian cricket history, but his influence and passion for the game will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
