There is an expression that nothing succeeds like success and last month’s victory in the Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup will have given trainer Frank Robinson’s yard quite a boost.
It was a great moment for both Robinson and jockey Tristan Godden who had his first Grade 1 triumph and the good run can continue on the Polytrack at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Tuesday when Robinson sends out One Path in Race 6, a Class 4 Handicap for fillies and mares over 1400m.
One Path had fair form as a three-year-old but in her only start as a four-year-old in October she took Polytrack specialist She’s A Machine to the wire, only beaten 0.15 lengths.
The winner is unbeaten on the surface this season and One Path, who looked unlucky in that first run back from a lengthy layoff, has improved with maturity.
The pair will meet again over the same track and trip, but this time Robinson’s filly should be the one adding to her tally.
One Path has just about everything in her favour, she has drawn ideally in gate No 2 and Robinson has partnered her with promising apprentice Dezahn Louw, so she will benefit from his 4kg claim.
Effectively, One Path is 5kg better off this time and from No 2 draw should be hard to beat.
A bigger threat is likely to come from Wengesai Masawi-trained Spinmyangelsspin. This lightly raced four-year-old has performed well since joining the yard.
The four-year-old daughter of Gimmethegreenlight began her career in the Western Cape but after four starts, three of them late last year and the other in January this year. She joined Masawi’s yard in August and had made her comeback eight months after her last start. Her new trainer fitted her in blinkers, and she was able to make a winning start for the stable over 1400m on the Greyville turf track.
Her next start was over 1600m but she cast a shoe in running and ended up in third place, beaten just 0.90 lengths by Miss Twinkle.
Her third run in KwaZulu-Natal was over 1400m on the Polytrack at Greyville and that saw her run out a facile 2.40-length winner over Poursomesugaronme.
She will be running over the same course and distance and with just a 3kg penalty handed out for her last starts, and jumping from No 1 draw, she looks a genuine threat to One Path.
Sean Veale has ridden her in all three of her starts in KZN and he will be back in the irons for this event.
It is not an easy card but perhaps the best bet on the card comes up in Race 2 where Malshana Mou stands out. The Vercingetorix filly is trained by Louis Goosen, whose yard has been coming to form. Malshana Mou, like One Path, ran a cracker after a rest.
She was off for six months and was beaten only 0.40 lengths by Mystic Dancer. The latter went on to frank the form with a win at handicap level.
Log-leading rider Craig Zackey sticks with Malshana Mou, who was beaten in close finishes from wide draws at Hollywoodbets Scottville as a juvenile. She should keep going this time stripping a lot fitter.
