One of the biggest controversies of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has erupted off the pitch. FIFA has made the extraordinary decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban, clearing the United States striker to face Belgium in their Round of 16 clash after U.S. President Donald J. Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino to request a review of the incident.

The unprecedented move has sparked fierce debate across the football world, with critics questioning whether political influence has compromised the integrity of FIFA’s disciplinary process.

How The Controversy Began
Balogun was shown a straight red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina after a VAR review determined that his challenge on Tarik Muharemovic warranted a dismissal.
Under FIFA’s tournament regulations, a straight red card automatically carries a one-match suspension, meaning Balogun was set to miss the crucial Round of 16 encounter against Belgium.
However, everything changed on Sunday.
Trump Steps In
According to multiple reports, President Donald Trump personally contacted FIFA President Gianni Infantino earlier in the week and urged football’s governing body to review the incident.
Sources familiar with the discussions said Trump believed Balogun’s dismissal was unjust and requested that FIFA reconsider the automatic suspension before the knockout fixture.
Shortly afterwards, FIFA announced that the implementation of Balogun’s suspension would be suspended for a one-year probationary period under Article 27 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
Importantly, the red card itself was not overturned. Instead, the punishment was deferred, allowing Balogun to remain eligible for the Belgium match. If he commits a similar offence within the next year, the suspended ban can still be enforced.
Trump later welcomed the decision on social media, thanking FIFA for what he described as correcting a “great injustice.”

Belgium Furious
The decision was met with astonishment in Belgium.
The Royal Belgian Football Association questioned how FIFA could suspend an automatic sanction when the tournament regulations clearly state that any player sent off must miss the following match.
Belgian officials argued that the move appeared to contradict FIFA’s own World Cup regulations and reportedly began examining their legal options before facing the United States.
Belgium coach Rudi Garcia was equally critical, describing the decision as something that belonged on “April Fool’s Day” rather than at a World Cup.
Mixed Reactions Across Football
The decision quickly became one of the biggest talking points of the tournament.
United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino welcomed the news, maintaining that Balogun’s challenge should never have resulted in a red card.
Captain Christian Pulisic admitted players first learned of the decision through social media while travelling to training, describing it as “great news” for the squad.
Elsewhere, however, criticism continued to mount.
Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter warned that football “must never become a playground for political power”, while pundits and former players questioned whether any nation would have received similar treatment without political intervention.
"I think it's an absolute disgrace." 😡

A Dangerous Precedent?
The biggest concern is not necessarily Balogun himself.
It is what the decision could mean for future tournaments.
Automatic suspensions have long been considered one of football’s clearest and most consistently applied rules. If political intervention can influence disciplinary outcomes during the sport’s biggest tournament, critics argue it raises uncomfortable questions about consistency, fairness and FIFA’s independence.
Supporters of the decision argue that FIFA simply corrected what many believed was an overly harsh punishment.
Others believe the governing body has opened the door to accusations that powerful figures can influence sporting decisions.
Whether FIFA acted in the interests of justice or bowed to political pressure will remain one of the defining debates of this World Cup.
What is certain is that Folarin Balogun will now be available when the United States face Belgium in one of the biggest knockout matches of the tournament.
The football will take centre stage once the whistle blows.
But FIFA’s decision is likely to be debated long after the final whistle.
