Mykhailo Mudryk Cleared To Return As Chelsea Welcome Winger Back

Chelsea have received a major boost ahead of the new Premier League season after Mykhailo Mudryk was cleared to return to football with immediate effect following the resolution of his anti-doping case.

The Football Association confirmed that the disciplinary proceedings against the Ukrainian winger were formally resolved on 30 July 2026 with the agreement of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), bringing an end to one of the most high-profile anti-doping cases in recent football history.

How The Case Unfolded

Mudryk’s case centred around a positive test for meldonium, a substance prohibited under WADA’s anti-doping regulations at the time his sample was collected.

Following an independent Regulatory Commission hearing held between 7 and 9 January 2026, the Chelsea winger was found to have committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) and was handed a four-year period of ineligibility. Mudryk subsequently appealed the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), maintaining throughout the process that he had never knowingly taken a banned substance.

Why The Decision Changed

A significant development came after changes were introduced to WADA’s Technical Document governing meldonium reporting.

Although the updated guidance is not retrospective, it means that if Mudryk’s sample had been collected under today’s regulations, the concentration detected would not have been reported and no Anti-Doping Rule Violations would have been pursued.

With that in mind, the FA, WADA and Mudryk agreed to resolve the appeal proceedings under Article 10.8.2 of the World Anti-Doping Code and Regulation 90 of the FA’s 2024 Anti-Doping Regulations.

As part of the agreement, Mudryk accepted that he had committed ADRVs under the rules that applied at the time and did not challenge the period of ineligibility he had already served. That effectively brings his suspension to an end, making him immediately eligible to resume competitive football.

Chelsea Ready To Reintegrate Mudryk

Chelsea have welcomed the outcome and confirmed that their focus is now on helping the 25-year-old return to full fitness before reintegrating him into the first-team squad.

In a club statement, Chelsea said:

“We know how much this opportunity to return means to him. Our focus now is on supporting Misha’s reintegration into the squad and helping him resume his career. Everyone at the Club now looks forward to helping Misha return to full fitness, back into the squad and back onto the pitch.”

Mudryk has not featured competitively since November 2024, meaning he now faces the challenge of rebuilding his match sharpness after almost two years away from first-team football.

What It Means For Chelsea

Mudryk’s return provides Chelsea with another attacking option ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The Ukrainian international joined the Blues from Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023 as one of Europe’s brightest young talents. While his time at Stamford Bridge has been disrupted by inconsistency and then suspension, Chelsea will hope the resolution of the case allows him to put the past behind him and fulfil the potential that convinced the club to invest heavily in his signature.

Whether Mudryk immediately earns a regular place in the starting XI remains to be seen, but after months of uncertainty, both player and club can finally begin looking ahead instead of back.
