The Mercedes sensation clinched his maiden world title with a third-place finish at Sunday’s Mexico City Grand Prix, becoming the first Italian driver to conquer Formula 1 since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Antonelli shattered the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first world championship with Red Bull in 2010.
The Italian’s achievement is even more remarkable considering he is only in his second Formula 1 season, having replaced seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025.

A New Superstar Is Born
Antonelli has enjoyed a sensational 2026 campaign, recording nine Grand Prix victories to establish himself as the dominant force in the championship.
His breakthrough came at the Chinese Grand Prix in March, where he became Formula 1’s youngest pole-sitter before securing his maiden race victory.
He followed that triumph with another victory in Japan, becoming the youngest driver to lead the championship standings.
Despite the pressure of competing against established stars such as Max Verstappen, Hamilton and Mercedes teammate George Russell, Antonelli demonstrated remarkable maturity throughout the season.

Sunday’s race in Mexico City provided the perfect conclusion to his title charge.
While Verstappen secured victory ahead of Hamilton, Antonelli kept his composure through a chaotic race to finish third and secure the championship with four rounds remaining.
The emotional Italian celebrated alongside his family and Mercedes team members, with Verstappen and Hamilton lifting the newly crowned champion onto their shoulders during the podium celebrations.
The Beginning Of A New Era?
Antonelli’s extraordinary rise represents another major success for Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff, who backed the Italian youngster to replace Hamilton despite his limited experience.
Now, just two seasons into his Formula 1 career, Antonelli has justified that faith by delivering a world championship and establishing himself as one of the sport’s brightest stars.
At only 20 years old, the Italian has potentially more than a decade of racing ahead of him, raising the exciting possibility that he could challenge some of Formula 1’s greatest records.
For now, however, Antonelli can celebrate an achievement that once seemed almost unimaginable.
