Proteas Test Rankings

The Proteas have officially climbed to the summit of world Test cricket after completing a remarkable series comeback against Australia, securing a dominant 176-run victory in the third and deciding Test at Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday.

The Proteas overturned a 1-0 series deficit to defeat the former world No. 1 side 2-1, with Kagiso Rabada and Simon Harmer producing a devastating final-day bowling performance to dismantle Australia’s batting line-up.

The victory saw Temba Bavuma’s side leapfrog the Australians into first place in the latest ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings, adding another significant achievement to their status as reigning World Test Championship winners.

South Africa now lead the rankings with 124 rating points, two ahead of Australia, who have slipped to second place after surrendering their position at the top.

For a Proteas side that has faced considerable scrutiny over the past few years, the achievement represents another emphatic statement that South Africa belong among the elite of international cricket.

Rabada & Harmer Destroy Australia At Newlands

The Proteas entered the final day needing 10 wickets to secure the series, having set Australia a challenging target of 288 following a dramatic fourth-day fightback.

Rabada wasted little time putting the visitors under pressure, removing Matthew Renshaw and Marnus Labuschagne in the opening over before dismissing Travis Head to leave Australia reeling at 22/3.

The dismissal of Head was particularly significant, taking Rabada to 350 Test wickets and making him just the fourth South African bowler to reach the milestone.

However, it was Harmer who delivered the decisive blows.

The veteran off-spinner exploited the deteriorating Newlands surface to devastating effect, claiming extraordinary figures of 6/16 from 21.1 overs as Australia’s batting line-up collapsed.

Despite resistance from Cameron Green and captain Pat Cummins, the visitors were eventually dismissed for just 111, handing South Africa a comprehensive 176-run victory.

Harmer finished with match figures of 10/120, while Rabada claimed 3/39 in the second innings to complete a memorable triumph in front of the Newlands faithful.

From Durban Disappointment To Series Glory

South Africa’s achievement becomes even more impressive when considering how the series began.

Australia dominated the opening Test at Kingsmead in Durban, securing a convincing 214-run victory that raised serious questions about the Proteas’ batting depth and ability to compete against one of the world’s strongest bowling attacks.

However, Bavuma’s side responded emphatically in Gqeberha.

Inspired by outstanding contributions from Marco Jansen and their bowling attack, South Africa crushed Australia by an innings and 31 runs at St George’s Park to level the series.

That victory set up a mouthwatering decider at Newlands, where the hosts again demonstrated remarkable resilience.

After surrendering a 100-run first-innings lead, South Africa appeared to be in trouble at 131/4 in their second innings.

However, brilliant centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder transformed the contest, with their crucial 154-run partnership giving the Proteas a defendable target.

Rabada and Harmer then completed the turnaround with a bowling performance that will live long in the memory.

Having been comprehensively beaten in Durban, South Africa responded by winning the next two Tests by an innings and 31 runs and 176 runs respectively, underlining their determination and ability to perform under pressure.

Proteas Overtake Australia In ICC Test Rankings

South Africa’s series triumph has officially ended Australia’s reign at the top of the ICC Test rankings, which they had held since May 2024.

The Proteas gained five rating points following their series victory, while Australia lost four, allowing Bavuma’s men to move into first place.

The Proteas have also strengthened their position in the 2025/27 World Test Championship standings, climbing into second place behind New Zealand, while Australia have dropped to third.

With the next World Test Championship final scheduled for 2027, South Africa have put themselves in a promising position to defend their title.

A Golden Era For South African Test Cricket?

South Africa’s rise to world No. 1 is particularly significant given the questions that surrounded the team heading into the Australian series.

The Proteas were criticised following their heavy defeat in Durban, with concerns raised over the batting line-up and the ability of several players to perform consistently against elite opposition.

However, their response demonstrated the depth, character and quality within the squad.

Jansen’s emergence as one of the world’s leading all-rounders, Rabada’s continued excellence with the ball and Harmer’s remarkable performance at Newlands have provided South Africa with a formidable bowling attack.

Meanwhile, the contributions of Bavuma, Rickelton and Mulder have highlighted the team’s ability to produce match-defining batting performances under pressure.

Under Bavuma’s leadership, the Proteas have now added the No. 1 Test ranking to their World Test Championship crown, further strengthening their claim to being the best red-ball side in international cricket.

The challenge will now be to maintain that position.

Australia will undoubtedly be determined to reclaim top spot, while New Zealand, India and England remain formidable competitors.

However, after defeating one of their greatest rivals in such emphatic fashion, South Africa have every reason to believe they can remain at the summit.
