Soweto Derby: Pirates Claim Bragging Rights With 2-1 Victory Over Chiefs

Soweto Derby Pirates

Orlando Pirates strengthened their PSL title credentials with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs in a thrilling Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Tshepang Moremi scored the decisive goal in the second half after Pule Mmodi had cancelled out Yanela Mbuthuma’s opener, securing another memorable victory for the Buccaneers in South African football’s biggest rivalry.

The result extended Pirates’ winning streak to seven consecutive league matches and ended Chiefs’ unbeaten start to the PSL campaign, delivering another significant blow to Amakhosi’s title ambitions.

Pirates Strike First Before Chiefs Fight Back

The match began with Chiefs looking the more threatening side, despite Pirates enjoying the greater share of possession.

Amakhosi created the first clear opportunity in the 13th minute when Mduduzi Shabalala played Wandile Duba through on goal, but Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine produced an important save to deny the striker.

That missed opportunity proved costly when the Buccaneers broke the deadlock in the 24th minute.

Thapelo Mokobodi released Mbuthuma with a well-timed pass over the Chiefs defence, and the Pirates forward fired a low effort that deflected off Thabo Moloisane before looping beyond goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

However, Chiefs responded just six minutes later following a costly mistake from Chaine.

The Pirates goalkeeper failed to deal with a relatively harmless delivery from Mfundo Vilakazi, allowing Mmodi to react quickest and squeeze the loose ball into the net.

The equaliser breathed new life into Amakhosi, who finished the opening half strongly and nearly took the lead when Vilakazi’s deflected effort struck the crossbar shortly before the interval.

With both teams creating opportunities, the sides went into half-time level at 1-1, setting up an intriguing second period.

Moremi Delivers The Decisive Blow

Pirates emerged from the break with renewed intensity and regained their advantage in the 55th minute following an excellent attacking move.

Mokobodi once again played a decisive role, racing through on goal before unselfishly squaring the ball to Moremi, who was left with a simple finish to restore the Buccaneers’ lead.

The goal capped another impressive week for the winger, who had scored twice in Pirates’ 3-0 Carling Knockout victory over Milford FC on Tuesday.

Chiefs struggled to regain their attacking rhythm after falling behind, while Pirates increasingly looked the more dangerous side on the counterattack.

Moremi nearly doubled his tally in the closing stages when his delicate effort from a tight angle struck the woodwork.

Substitute Oswin Appollis also had the ball in the net after rounding Petersen, but his effort was controversially ruled out for offside, with television replays suggesting the decision was incorrect.

The frustration continued for Chiefs deep into stoppage time when captain Inacio Miguel received a second yellow card, reducing Amakhosi to 10 men and effectively ending their hopes of a late equaliser.

Pirates held firm to secure all three points and another famous victory over their greatest rivals.

Pirates Extend Their Soweto Derby Dominance

Saturday’s victory continued Pirates’ impressive recent record against Chiefs, extending their unbeaten run in league derbies to seven matches.

The Buccaneers have now collected 25 points from their opening nine Premiership encounters, with their seventh consecutive league victory further strengthening their reputation as serious contenders to retain the title.

Moremi and Mbuthuma will deservedly receive much of the praise, but Mokobodi’s contribution was equally important, with the midfielder providing the assists for both goals.

For Chiefs, the result exposed familiar problems.

Despite creating several promising opportunities in the first half, Amakhosi were unable to capitalise on their chances and struggled to contain Pirates’ attacking movement after the interval.

The defeat leaves Da Cruz’s side 11 points behind their Soweto rivals after nine rounds, although the season remains in its early stages.

More concerning is their recent league form, with Chiefs now winless in four consecutive PSL matches and facing increasing pressure to turn promising performances into victories.
