Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has officially announced his final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as South Africa prepares to return to football’s biggest stage for the first time since 2010.

South Africa will open their campaign against co-hosts Mexico on June 11 in Mexico City before facing Czechia and South Korea in Group A.
And while Broos has largely stayed loyal to the core group that secured qualification, there are still several fascinating storylines within the squad selection,, including experienced leaders, emerging stars, and a growing Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns influence throughout the team.

Broos Sticks With the Core That Delivered Qualification
One of the clearest themes of the squad announcement is continuity.
Broos resisted the temptation to make major changes and instead trusted the group that helped Bafana qualify for the World Cup after years of rebuilding under the Belgian coach.
Captain Ronwen Williams unsurprisingly leads the squad after another outstanding season for both club and country. The goalkeeper remains arguably South Africa’s most important player heading into the tournament, bringing leadership, composure, and elite shot-stopping ability.
In midfield, the engine room again revolves around Teboho Mokoena, whose tactical discipline and passing range have become central to Broos’ system.
Meanwhile, Broos has also shown faith in experience by including veteran playmaker Themba Zwane despite concerns around fitness and age. At 36, Zwane is expected to play a crucial mentorship role while still offering creativity in tight matches.
The New Generation Has Arrived
While experience remains important, this squad also feels like the official arrival of South Africa’s next generation.
The inclusion of Relebohile Mofokeng is perhaps the clearest example of that shift.
The Orlando Pirates winger has rapidly become one of the most exciting young footballers in the country and now enters the World Cup as one of Bafana’s most dangerous attacking threats.
Alongside him, players like:
- Jayden Adams,
- Tshepang Moremi,
- and Thapelo Maseko
Broos has also rewarded several defenders who impressed domestically, including uncapped options such as Olwethu Makhanya and Bradley Cross.
That balance between trusted experience and fearless youth could define South Africa’s tournament.
Sundowns & Pirates Dominate the Squad
Another striking feature of the squad is how heavily it is built around the recent success of Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
Sundowns players continue to form the tactical backbone of the side after their CAF Champions League triumph, while Pirates contribute several key attacking and defensive players following their PSL title-winning campaign.
That existing chemistry could become extremely valuable at the tournament level, especially for a national side that does not possess the same depth as many traditional World Cup nations.
