For years, Justin Gaethje has been one of the UFC’s most exciting fighters. He has delivered unforgettable knockouts, Fight of the Year contenders and some of the most entertaining performances in mixed martial arts history. Yet despite his popularity and success, one achievement had always eluded him: becoming the undisputed UFC lightweight champion.

That all changed on Sunday night.
In the main event of the historic UFC Freedom 250 card, Gaethje produced one of the biggest upsets of the year, defeating previously unbeaten Ilia Topuria via fourth-round TKO to capture the undisputed UFC lightweight championship. The fight was stopped between the fourth and fifth rounds after Topuria’s corner decided their fighter could no longer continue.
For Gaethje, it was the crowning moment of a remarkable career.
The Biggest Win Of Gaethje’s Career
Heading into the contest, many viewed Topuria as the favourite. The Spanish-Georgian champion entered the fight with an undefeated professional record and victories over UFC legends such as Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira. Many believed he was on his way to becoming one of the dominant champions of his generation.
Gaethje had other ideas.
While Topuria edged the opening rounds with his trademark precision and aggression, the American weathered the storm and gradually turned the tide. As the fight wore on, Gaethje’s pressure, durability and relentless striking began to take their toll.
The turning point arrived in the third round.
A crushing right hand rocked Topuria and was followed by a sustained assault that left the champion visibly damaged. By the end of the fourth round, Topuria’s face was badly swollen, his vision appeared compromised, and his corner made the difficult decision to stop the fight.

Persistence Finally Pays Off
Few fighters have experienced as many ups and downs as Gaethje.
Throughout his UFC career, he has repeatedly put himself in a position to fight for championship gold, only to fall short against elite opposition. Yet he continued to rebuild, continued to entertain and continued to believe his opportunity would come again.
At UFC Freedom 250, that persistence was finally rewarded.
The victory improved Gaethje’s professional record to 28-5 and secured the undisputed lightweight title that had long remained out of reach. For many fans, it was one of the most satisfying championship victories in recent UFC history.
Topuria Suffers His First Defeat
The defeat represents a significant moment in Topuria’s career.
After entering the fight unbeaten and widely regarded as one of the sport’s pound-for-pound stars, the former champion was forced to experience adversity for the first time. Despite showing tremendous heart throughout the contest, the damage accumulated as the fight progressed and ultimately forced his corner to intervene.
The loss drops Topuria to 17-1 as a professional and raises fascinating questions about what comes next for one of MMA’s brightest stars.
If history has taught us anything, it is that elite champions often respond strongly after their first setback.

A Historic Night For The UFC
The result was made even more memorable by the setting.
UFC Freedom 250 took place on the South Lawn of the White House, becoming the first professional sporting event held at the iconic venue. The card was staged as part of celebrations marking America’s 250th anniversary and delivered a main event worthy of the occasion.
In the co-main event, Ciryl Gane defeated Alex Pereira via second-round TKO to claim the interim heavyweight championship, denying Pereira’s bid to become the first fighter in UFC history to win titles in three different weight divisions.
