The 2026/27 LaLiga season gets underway this weekend, and the outright odds suggest Spanish football’s two giants could be set for another heavyweight battle for the crown.

Barcelona are the 1.72 favourites to retain their title and complete a remarkable three-peat under Hansi Flick. Real Madrid, who have responded to consecutive trophyless seasons by bringing José Mourinho back to the Santiago Bernabéu and embarking on a major rebuild, are breathing down their necks at 2.10.
Then there’s a huge jump to Atletico Madrid at 15.00.
Diego Simeone’s side remain the most realistic challengers to Spain’s big two and have strengthened significantly this summer, but the odds illustrate the size of the task facing them.
Here’s our in-depth look at the three leading contenders for the 2026/27 LaLiga crown.
Barcelona – 1.72
Can Flick Complete The Three-Peat?
Barcelona aren’t simply defending champions. They’re chasing a third consecutive LaLiga title. That alone explains why they’re favourites.
Hansi Flick has restored Barcelona as the dominant force in Spanish domestic football, building an aggressive, energetic side around a core that is frighteningly young.
At the centre of everything is Lamine Yamal.
Still only 19, the Spanish superstar enters the season as one of the biggest names in world football following Spain’s World Cup triumph. Alongside him, Flick can call upon the likes of Pedri, Dani Olmo, Anthony Gordon and Raphinha, giving Barca a core that combines elite quality with plenty of room for further improvement.
That’s perhaps the most intimidating aspect of this Barcelona team. Their best players aren’t ageing together. Many are still developing.
Life After Lewandowski
There has nevertheless been significant change.
Robert Lewandowski’s departure for Chicago Fire brings an end to his four-year stay in Catalonia and removes one of the most prolific goalscorers of his generation from Flick’s squad. Ronald Araújo is another major departure, with the Uruguayan defender leaving for Liverpool.
Replacing Lewandowski’s presence at centre-forward is an obvious question.
Barcelona have enough goals elsewhere, particularly with Yamal and Raphinha, while Ferran Torres remains part of the attacking picture for now. However, Torres has also attracted strong interest from Paris Saint-Germain, meaning the composition of Flick’s attack could still change before the transfer window closes.
There’s another enormous transfer storyline hanging over their summer.
Rodri.
Barcelona have been pursuing the Manchester City and Spain midfielder, and adding a player of his calibre to a midfield already featuring Pedri would make an extremely strong argument that the champions have actually improved despite some notable departures.
Why Barcelona Are Favourites
Continuity is their biggest advantage.
Flick knows his squad.
His players understand the system.
They’ve won consecutive championships.
And many of their most important players are entering their prime or haven’t even reached it yet.
Barcelona’s domestic consistency over the last two campaigns means Real Madrid need to prove they can bridge the gap rather than the other way around.
The champions also open their campaign against Athletic Club before facing Elche and Rayo Vallecano, giving them an opportunity to establish early momentum.
At 1.72, however, there isn’t much room for error from a betting perspective.
You’re paying a premium for the strongest and most proven team in Spain.
Real Madrid – 2.10
The Return Of The Special One
If Barcelona represent continuity, Real Madrid represent revolution and it starts in the dugout with the return of Jose Mourinho.
More than a decade after his first spell in charge, the Portuguese coach has returned to the Bernabeu following Real Madrid’s failure to win a major trophy in each of the last two seasons.
It’s one of the most fascinating managerial appointments in European football.
The Mourinho who arrived in Madrid in 2010 was at the peak of his powers, fresh from winning the treble with Inter Milan. His first spell produced the famous 100-point LaLiga title in 2011/12, as his side scored a staggering 121 league goals.
This Mourinho arrives under very different circumstances.
He’s older, his recent career hasn’t matched the extraordinary standards of his prime, and football has changed considerably since his first stint.
But the challenge is familiar. Beat Barcelona.
Madrid Have Gone Big In The Transfer Market
Real haven’t simply changed the coach; they’ve attacked the transfer market. Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Marc Cucurella and Denzel Dumfries are among the experienced additions brought in to strengthen Mourinho’s squad, addressing multiple areas of the pitch.
Then there’s Yan Diomande.
Real moved aggressively to secure the highly rated Ivorian winger from RB Leipzig in one of the biggest transfers of the summer, adding another explosive young attacker to an already frightening collection of forward talent.
Put all of that around Kylian Mbappe and suddenly Mourinho has serious weaponry.
Real’s recruitment also appears designed to address some of the balance issues that followed the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modrić. Bernardo’s intelligence, technical security and experience should be particularly valuable in that regard.
Vinicius Stays
Perhaps Madrid’s most important piece of business wasn’t a signing at all. It was keeping Vinicius Junior.
After more than 18 months of uncertainty surrounding his future, Real finally reached an agreement with the Brazilian on a new contract running until 2032. Arsenal had shown interest and Vinicius had been open to considering a move if negotiations failed to produce a breakthrough.
Instead, Mourinho gets to build around both Mbappe and Vinicius. Add Diomandé and the attacking ceiling is extraordinary.
The challenge is making all of those pieces fit.
Why Real Madrid Could Be The Better Bet
This is where the outright market becomes fascinating. Are Barcelona more likely to win LaLiga? Most likely.
But are they sufficiently more likely to justify the difference between 1.72 and 2.10? That’s debatable because Madrid’s squad has undergone a major upgrade.
Konate strengthens the centre of defence. Cucurella and Dumfries provide proven quality at full-back. Bernardo adds intelligence and control. Diomande provides another explosive attacking option. Vinicius has committed his future to the club.
And then there’s Mbappé.
Madrid already possessed one of football’s most destructive goalscorers before embarking on their summer spending. The concern is how quickly Mourinho can turn a collection of extraordinary individuals into a championship team.
There could be teething problems but at 2.10, Madrid are much more than simply an alternative to Barcelona. They’re a genuine threat.
Atletico Madrid – 15.00
Can Simeone Break Up The Big Two?
Atletico Madrid have been here before. Whenever Spanish football appears destined to become a two-horse race, Diego Simeone’s team lurk in the background waiting for an opportunity.
They’ve taken it twice before. Atleti broke the Barcelona-Real Madrid duopoly to become champions in 2013/14, then repeated the achievement in 2020/21.
Doing it again would rank among Simeone’s greatest accomplishments.
The market gives them just a puncher’s chance at 15.00, but Atletico haven’t spent the summer behaving like a club satisfied with merely qualifying for the Champions League.
Another Atletico Rebuild
There has been substantial investment at the Metropolitano. Atletico have added Kang-in Lee, Alejandro Grimaldo and Morten Hjulmand, bringing creativity, width and midfield steel to Simeone’s squad. Cristian Romero is on the brink of joining from Tottenham, which would be a perfect signing for Simeone.
Grimaldo is particularly intriguing.
The Spanish wing-back provides elite delivery and attacking output from the left, qualities that could add another dimension to Atletico’s game.
Hjulmand brings aggression, defensive awareness and physicality to midfield.
Kang-in Lee provides technical quality and versatility in advanced areas and has inherited Atletico’s No. 7 shirt.
It’s part of a broader evolution under Simeone.
Atletico aren’t simply the deep-block, counter-attacking side they’re often stereotyped as anymore. The Argentine has gradually assembled players capable of giving his team more control and creativity with the ball.
The Griezmann Era Ends
The most symbolic change is Antoine Griezmann’s departure. The Frenchman has left for MLS, bringing an end to an extraordinary Atletico career and removing one of the defining players of the Simeone era.
That puts even greater emphasis on Julian Alvarez. The Argentine striker has the talent to become the face of the next Atletico team, although his future has itself generated considerable speculation this summer.
Barcelona have been linked with Alvarez, but Simeone publicly insisted this month that the forward will remain at Atletico.
Keeping him is absolutely essential. Lose Alvarez, and the 15.00 becomes considerably less appealing.
Keep him and surround him with the improved supporting cast Atletico have assembled, and suddenly there’s a credible route towards a title challenge.
Why 15.00 Is Tempting
Atletico finished fourth last season, so there’s no pretending the gap doesn’t exist.
But outright betting is about price as much as probability. Barcelona at 1.72 need to win the league roughly 58% of the time for the raw implied probability to be justified.
Real Madrid at 2.10 implies roughly 48%.
Atletico at 15.00 implies only around 6.7%.
That makes Atletico interesting as a speculative long shot. They’re not our predicted champions, but at fifteen times your stake, they don’t necessarily have to be particularly likely champions to represent an interesting outright proposition.
Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Where Could The Title Be Won?
On paper, Barcelona arguably have the better-established team. Real may have the deeper collection of individual superstars. That distinction could define the championship.
Flick already has a functioning system. Barcelona know how they want to press, build attacks and create opportunities for Yamal and their other forwards.
Mourinho has considerably more construction work to do but Real’s potential ceiling is frightening.
A team containing Mbappe, Vinicius and their new additions doesn’t necessarily need months to become dangerous. Mourinho has also historically been excellent at creating an immediate siege mentality and getting players to buy into a clear objective.
There is another variable: the Champions League.
Both clubs expect to challenge for European football’s biggest trophy, and the physical and psychological demands of a deep European run can have a major impact on the domestic championship.
Atletico face the same problem, which is why depth matters, and it’s one reason Madrid’s aggressive recruitment makes them particularly interesting.
Best Bet: Barcelona to win LaLiga 2026/27 at 1.72.
